September 26, 2012

I finally got to relax yesterday, but it was only thanks to the cold I have so I'm undecided as to whether it was a good evening or a bad one. Relax = good (I really needed it). Cold = bad. I guess it was a wash, huh? This cold is going to make me miss the county meeting tonight too. I usually never miss those, but the way I'm feeling now would just detract from the whole thing & there are 2 other people that will be going from our department, so we're covered. Phew! I started out yesterday very slowly. Didn't really have the energy to do much. I started out with the housework to get it out of the way & only had the energy to do 1/3 of it. I swapped out the shower curtain so I could wash the one that was up there, fed the cats & dogs, swept the bathroom, & changed the bedding & living room chair afghan. I had a hot cocoa, sent out the FD page for training last night, drove Josh to work & had a black Hummer ride my butt for a little bit but not so close that it really bothered me. I simply thought it was curious. Then after we passed through the next traffic light, the Hummer pulls into the other lane, comes up next to me, beeps & waves enthusiastically. I waved back & Josh asked "Who was THAT?" I have NO idea! LOL! They change lanes again but this time they're in front of me. I notice a rather large sticker on the back window that says "PHI AIR MED". Ah HA! OK, so ... a pilot I'm guessing. I have a PHI sticker on the back of my truck too, but it's a much smaller one. Either I know this guy (it could only be Paul if I know him), or he's someone else who works for PHI & was just reacting to my sticker. We stop at the next traffic light & he waves again & starts blowing kisses at me through his side mirror. Must be Paul. LOL! At the 3rd light we got to, he switched lanes to turn off & waved goodbye. Thank you for making my day! :) With people & traffic being what it is these days, it was nice to see "friendly" gestures from another driver. LOL! It's amazing the gestures I've seen drivers give other drivers on the road. I just set my cruise control & stay out of everyone's way. I swung through the drive-thru at Arby's for a quick Arby's Melt for lunch & then headed back home before the DayQuil wore off. I didn't do too much after that. I was tired, had a headache, & took more DayQuil. I knitted another panel on the afghan but it took much longer than usual. I just didn't have much energy. After that I crawled into the Matrix & played one of my houses ... this one is pictured above. I made a lot of changes to the house this time around. I removed all the fencing & the huge monstrosity of a fighter jet on a pedestal that I had in the front yard. Selling off those items yielded almost $100k, so I added lighting to the upper & lower decks in both the front & rear of the house (I love a lot of lighting!) & with the rest of the money I bought the corporate towers & the diner in town. I didn't just become an partner, I bought both places out completely. Now I get to collect money once or twice a week from them & it's a decent amount at that. I also became a partner of another business & will soon just buy that one out too. I don't do that in any of the games anymore, but this time I figured why not? At this rate, none of my Sims will ever HAVE to work. They most likely will, but they don't HAVE to. Isn't that nice? Don't you wish real life could be like that? My 2nd generation Sim just became a teen. His name is Vinnie & although he doesn't have a lifetime wish yet, I'm guessing he's going to enter into the music career. Not sure is symphonic or rock star branch yet. He has the virtuoso trait, so it will probably be one of the 2. He's met his future wife in grade school ... Tenisha Devine. Someday, when they have a child, the 3rd generation will be named Uma or Urban. When Pete & Josh got home from work, I didn't really have the energy to cook. I ate an entire can of creamed corn for dinner (yep, nothing but that) & planned beef enchiladas for tonight's dinner. We had a bunch of new season shows waiting for us on the DVR & ended up watching the season premier of NCIS (Ducky is ALIVE!) & NCIS Los Angeles. While I was knitting yesterday I turned on my office TV & watched Friends. I've never EVER watched that show before & it's not bad. As usual, I get into something long after it's already been here, been popular, & ended. I'm trying to be better at that these days. I have a bunch of new shows set to record this season. At least I'll know if I like them or not BEFORE they've been off the air for years. LOL! Pete is a little harder to convince though, he'll watch reruns of shows he KNOWS he likes before trying out a new one he's never seen. That's why the DVR is holding a couple new shows all week ... he just isn't up for trying them out yet. He finally got up the courage to try Revolution the night before last & liked it. County meeting tonight.

Expiate:
1: To extinguish the guilt incurred by. 2: To make amends for.
"Disaster shall fall upon you, which you will not be able to expiate." That ominous biblical prophecy (Isaiah 47:11 RSV) shows that "expiate" was once involved in confronting the forces of evil as well as in assuaging guilt. the word derives from the Latin expiare ("to atone for"), a root that in turn traces to the Latin term for "pious." "Expiate" originally referred to warding off evil by using sacred rites, or to using sacred rites to cleanse or purify something. By the 17th century, Shakespeare (& others) were using it to mean "to put an end to": "But when in thee time's furrows I behold,/Then look I death my days should expiate" ("Sonnet 22"). Those senses are now obsolete, & only the "extinguish the guilt" & "make amends" senses remain in use.

"Have you had work done - like a face lift?"
"Hey, do I look younger? It must be all that clean living!"
"How old are you?"
"29 & holding." "Today I feel about 93."

How many religious services do observant Jews attend during Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement?

I think reasonable expenditures on pets are good. Ridiculous amounts of money spent on an animal - many times selfishly on the part of the human because we're so emotionally attached that we allow the animal to stay in pain - can be inhumane, cruel & financially ridiculous.

Screen legend Paul Newman dies (2008):
On this day in 2008, Paul Newman, one of the leading movie stars of the 20th century, dies at the age of 83 from cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. In a career spanning more than five decades, Newman made over 65 movies, including the classics “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting” and “The Verdict.” As reported in The New York Times, Newman’s talent as an actor was drawn from his “physical grace, unassuming intelligence and good humor that made it all seem effortless.”
Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, and raised in the nearby suburb of Shaker Heights. In high school, he acted in school drama performances and played football. At age 18, Newman joined the U.S. Navy and served as a radioman/gunner on a torpedo plane during World War II. After the war, Newman attended Kenyon College on a football scholarship and continued to act. He graduated in 1949 and began performing with small theater companies. Following the 1950 death of his father, Newman briefly moved back to Cleveland to help manage his family’s sporting goods store. After a stint at the Yale Drama School, Newman made his Broadway debut in “Picnic” in 1953. His silver-screen debut came a year later in “The Silver Chalice,” which he later labeled the worst film ever made. Newman’s first starring movie role was in 1956’s “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” in which he portrayed real-life boxer Rocky Graziano.
The famously blued-eyed Newman earned his first Academy Award nomination, for best actor, with his performance in the 1959 big-screen version of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hat Tin Roof.” He went on to collect lead-actor Oscar nominations for his work in seven other films: “The Hustler” (1961), “Hud” (1963), “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), “Absence of Malice” (1981), “The Verdict” (1982), “The Color of Money” (1986) and “Nobody’s Fool” (1994). Of those nominations, he took home only a golden statuette for “The Color of Money.” Additionally, he garnered an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for 2002’s “Road to Perdition.” Newman also earned an Oscar nomination for best picture with 1968’s “Rachel, Rachel,” in which he directed his wife, the actress Joanne Woodward (1930-).
Among Newman’s many other notable cinematic performances was 1969’s “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” in which he teamed up with Robert Redford (1936-) to play a team of bank robbers in the Old West. The film was a commercial and critical success and won four Oscars. Newman and Redford collaborated again with 1973’s “The Sting,” in which they portrayed a pair of con men. The movie collected seven Academy Awards, including best picture, and was a big hit at the box office.
In addition to acting, Newman was known for his love of auto racing. After playing a professional race car driver in 1969’s “Winning,” he became passionate about the sport and competed in a number of races, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, at which he took second place in 1979. In 1983, he co-founded a racing team with Carl Haas, Newman/Haas Racing (now Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing).
Newman was also a noted philanthropist who launched a series of summer camps for sick children and founded a multi-million-dollar food business, Newman’s Own, the profits of which go to charity.

Stop heading to the store for a few things for dinner because the cupboard is bare. Look again. See if you can make dinner from what's there. Who ways eggs are only for breakfast? Soup & grilled cheese work, too.

Sweeping the kitchen floor should be done regularly. This is where the dust, crumbs, & dirt seem to collect most quickly. By keeping this area clean you're less likely to spread the dirt throughout the rest of the house, thereby keeping the rest of the house cleaner!

Turn a coffee can into a time capsule. Have your children put things inside that will remind their future selves of what they were like this year. Then bury the can.
