This about sums up my evening last night. Yesterday started off busy. I did my usual stuff to start the day ... facebook, Sims Social, The Ville, Blogger ... then went to work on the important stuff like the house. I cleaned the bathroom counters, dusted the bedroom lights, fed the cats & dogs, cleaned the dining room chairs, straightened out the left kitchen cabinet under the sink (shopping bag storage & cleaners), cleaned the final cushion on the sofa, mopped the hallway, blew the dust out of my office PC, swept the dining room, & changed the bedding. After that I did a couple more routine things & then started prepping for the FD business meeting. I started typing up the minutes from last month's meeting, drove Josh to work, stopped at the station & got the mail, paid a bill, filled out some deposit slips, ran to the bank & made the deposit, went back to the station & dropped off the deposit slips, came back home & finished the meeting minutes, showered, & had barely enough time before the meeting to finish knitting the final afghan panel, but I finished it. I didn't have time to connect it to the afghan though, so that will be done today (I hope). Anyway ... I got dressed up, did my hair, put on my makeup & perfume, & headed out to the meeting. We were about 20 minutes into the meeting when my phone rang. SORRY! Forgot to mute the sucker. I hit mute, looked at the display & it said "Private". Nope, I don't take private calls. Must be another telemarketer. They love me & I love to ignore them. The whole time my phone is buzzing & vibrating on the table. Silent, but still semi-annoying. It stopped. Then almost immediately it did it again. Sheesh, I'm in a meeting people! I look at the display & it said "Private". Again?? Uhhh, aren't YOU the pushy salesman! Must be a car salesman or someone that makes a really good commission. Buzz buzz buzz vibrate. It stops. Then AGAIN! 3 times in a row? Yep, it said "Private". BUT ... 3 times in a row usually means an emergency, so now ... confused, I answer the phone & head out the door so they don't have to stop the meeting & listen to me yap on the phone. I usually never have a problem with reception in the station, but this time all I could hear was a man's voice cutting in & out. I finally get outside & can hear clearly, still very curious as to who it is & what is so important. If it's a telemarketer I'm going to bite his head off! Nope, not a telemarketer. In fact, this part of the blog ends here. The people who were with me in the meeting last night know what happened. They were there & saw me come back into the station shaking so hard I couldn't even put my phone back in its case. I left the meeting as soon as I could pick up my keys (which took some coordination I didn't quite have at that moment). Anyway, since I'm not going to post what happened HERE, if you know me & want to know, text me or IM me & I'll fill you in on the rest. The rest of the evening, from about 7:30 on, was a blur. 1st day of fall Saturday! AC units come out of the windows, screens go in, ALL windows open, new shoes come out of the box, shorts go into winter storage, fall cleaning gets underway, & sweating like a roast in an oven ends until next summer. WOOHOO!

Don't use a state 529 plan to save for college. It's recommended that you use an Education Savings Account (ESA) for the 1st $2,000 a year that you invest. Consider your rate of return. In a state 529, the amount of money you make on your savings is the inflation rate of college tuition, which nationally for the last 50 years has been about 7%. In an ESA, your money grows tax free, & if you put that in good growth stock mutual funds, you should average more than 7%.

Inoculate:
To introduce something into; especially : to introduce a serum or antibody into (an organism) to treat or prevent a disease.
In 1796, the English physician Edward Jenner discovered that inoculating people with cowpox could provide immunity against smallpox.
If you think you see a connection between "inoculate" & "ocular" ("of or relating to the eye"), you're not mistaken - both words look back to oculus, the Latin word for "eye." But what does the eye have to do with inoculation? The answer lies in the original use of "inoculate" in Middle English: "to insert a bud in a plant." Latin oculus was sometimes applied to things that were seen to resemble eyes, such as the bud of a plant. "Inoculate" was later applied to other forms of engrafting or implanting, including the introduction of vaccines as a preventative against disease.

“The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,” a novel by Michael
Chabon about the glory years of the American comic book, is published on
this day in 2000. The book went on to win the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for
fiction.
Chabon, who was born in Washington, D.C., in 1963, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and earned a master’s degree in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine. His first novel, “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh,” a coming-of-age story set in the city named in the title, was written as his graduate school thesis. Published in 1988, the book became a best-seller and was later made into a movie.
Chabon spent five years working on his next novel before abandoning it and starting on a new book, “Wonder Boys.” Released in 1995, “Wonder Boys” centers on an aging professor struggling to complete his years-in-the-making second tome; a Hollywood adaptation starring Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire was released in 2000. That year also saw the debut of Chabon’s third novel, “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,” an epic story about comic book creators in New York in the mid-20th century. In addition to winning the Pulitzer Prize, “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” received a slew of other literary honors.
Among Chabon’s other credits are “Summerland,” a 2002 fantasy novel for young adults; “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union,” a 2007 detective novel; and “Manhood for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son,” a 2009 essay collection. He has also written screenplays and several collections of short stories.
Chabon is married to novelist Ayelet Waldman, with whom he has four children. In 2005, Waldman became known for a controversial essay on marriage and motherhood in which she wrote, “I love my husband more than I love my children.”
In 2010, Chabon was elected the chairman of the board of directors of the MacDowell Colony, a prestigious artists’ retreat based in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where he once penned parts of “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.”
