Happy Friday! So what's new out there? I hope everyone is doing well. Things are OK here, I dusted all the accent stuff in the bathroom, made the bed, fed the cats & dogs, dusted off the silk flowers on the dining room table, cleaned the kitchen counters, got a box from the mailman (my new set of Pyrex bakeware!), folded & hung the laundry, dusted off the home theater system, mopped the bedroom, dusted the wall decor in my office, & swept the bathroom. Then it was break time in the massage chair while playing a couple games of 5 Card Slingo on Game Lounge, & then off to drive Josh to work.
On the way there I bought Josh, Kyle, & I lunch at KFC, & on the
way back & bought Kyle & I Dunkin' Donuts for dessert. I then knitted the 1st panel of the new afghan I started, the Mock Cable Afghan & then loaded up the Sims 3. The house shown is one of my creations, Lafayette, & it's placed on the beautiful island of Cornucopia. When I loaded up the game last night, it was still a fairly new game with Zoey, my 1st generation Sim, working at the hospital towards her lifetime wish as a World Renowned Surgeon. When I left off, she was working on her personal relationship with a co-worker that she had planned to marry. Something was wrong though. I could see the boyfriend, but my Sim wasn't there. I mean, she was there, but her plumbob was just above the grass. She was underground & although I could do all sorts of actions, I couldn't see her. Just her plumbob bouncing on the grass. The game was also sticking badly. In fact, it was frozen more than it was moving. Virtually unplayable. I exited the game entirely without saving & tried again. Same thing. Go for 3? Yep. 3 strikes. I deleted the game & had to start over completely. I placed the house again in Cornucopia, found Zoey & her cat Mikey & placed them in the house, went to the hospital to apply for the same job/career, & met a male co-worker, but this time someone different. This time it was Leo Wetzel. before I closed down the game for the night, they were married & had a baby girl named Scarlet (2nd generation). Now that Pete was home, it was time to make that wonderful steak dinner. Salad with tomato roasted garlic steak. YUM! After dinner we watched Dark Matters & then headed off to bed. All in all, not a bad day. Tonight I'm going to work on a Website for a little bit, & then get ready for tomorrow ... the 1st day of fall! AC units out, screens in, fall wardrobe set & ready to go, new shoes swapped out with last year's ... I just love the 1st day of fall! Not as much as I love the 1st day of spring, but close. I'd say it's my 3rd favorite day of the year ... with New Year's Day being #1.
Avoid the pile of miscellaneous things that accumulate on the nightstand. Limit yourself to an alarm clock, glass of water & 1 book that you're currently reading.

Meliorism:
The belief that the world tends to improve & that humans can aid its betterment.
Jane's resolute meliorism fueled her insistence that worldwide eradication of hunger was indeed attainable within her lifetime.
In 1877, British novelist George Eliot believed she had coined "meliorist" when she wrote, "I don't know that I ever heard anybody use the word 'meliorist' except myself." Her contemporaries credited her with coining both "meliorist" & "meliorism," but there's evidence that at least "meliorist" had been around for 30 years or so before she started using it. Whoever coined it did so by drawing on the Latin melior, meaning "better," & may have been influenced by another melior descendant, "meliorate," a synonym of "ameliorate" ("to make better") that was introduced to English in the mid-1500s.
On September 21, 2002, Swedish engineer Nils Bohlin dies after a heart attack. Bohlin spent most of the 1950s
developing ejection seats for Saab airplanes, and in 1958, he became
the Volvo Car Corporation's first safety engineer. At Volvo, he designed
the first three-point safety belt--a seatbelt with one strap that
crossed diagonally across the user's chest and another that secured his
or her hips. "In a way," Bohlin said shortly before he died, "my design
works as much because the belt is comfortable for the user as it does
because it is safer. The pilots I worked with in the aerospace industry
were willing to put on almost anything to keep them safe in case of a
crash, but regular people in cars don't want to be uncomfortable even
for a minute."
At the time that Bohlin introduced his
three-point belt, not many non–racecar-drivers used seatbelts at all.
(In fact, they were optional equipment in most cars: buyers had to pay
extra if they wanted them.) The belts that were in use consisted of a
single lap belt with a buckle that fastened over the stomach. In
high-speed crashes, they would keep a person in his or her seat, but the
abdominal pressure they caused could result in serious internal
injuries. Bohlin's belt, by contrast, was much safer; it was just as
easy to fasten; and it protected both the upper and lower body.
By
1959, the three-point belt was standard equipment in all Swedish
Volvos, and by 1963, the company was installing the belts in all of its
cars. Volvo even provided Bohlin's design to other carmakers for free.
The design has changed very little in the past 50 years--it was
practically perfect just as Bohlin designed it--and the U.S. National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that buckling up with a
Bohlin belt reduces a person's risk of dying in a car crash by almost 50
percent. "There is," said Volvo's CEO, "a little bit of Nils Bohlin in
every car."
On the day that he died, Bohlin was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio.
Put the cooler in the shade & place a wet towel over it to keep the ice packs cold as long as possible.
Respect for a person with a disability:
- Don't stare, even if you think you'd be inconspicuous.
- Ask 1st if you want to help. Avoid being overly solicitous.
- Use basic manners: greet, introduce, & show appreciation just as you would in other situations.
- Speak directly to the person instead of through a companion who might be with him.
- Use your natural tone of voice, unless he has a hearing impairment & asks you to speak up or slow down.
- Don't ask personal questions about the person's disability. If he wants to talk about his condition, he'll initiate the discussion.
- Don't pity the person. if the person doesn't view his life as tragic - it isn't.
