September 20, 2012

Luckily yesterday was a better day even though I was extremely tired ALL day, had a headache most of the day, my back was killing me, & I didn't feel well in general. Now that says a lot about the previous day doesn't it if even with all that, it was STILL a better day. Even though I felt like crap, I pushed on through the day & got everything done. I started out with a Carnation Instant Breakfast to fuel up & get going. I dusted the bathroom lights, dusted my night stand, fed the cats & dogs, dusted the dining room lights, neatened & cleaned one of the shelves in the refrigerator door, did a load of laundry, dusted off the home theater system, mopped the bathroom, & swept the bedroom. Kyle took out the trash & cleaned the dining room & Pete got the mail. At lunch time I made Alfredo for Josh & I, went through the mail for the week (bills get opened immediately, but the catalogs & "stuff" get sorted out weekly), & then FINALLY finished that afghan. YAY!

Looks great too. The pic was posted on facebook. Today I'll decide what I'm making next & do the pick the yarn thing that I enjoy so much. :) After that I decided to play one of the houses I made in Sims called Sturbridge. I chose Twinbrook & had to bulldoze a house that was only a 2 bedroom but sitting on a 60x60 lot (the size I needed for Sturbridge). Deleted that house, placed my house, created a Sim & a Bull Dog, & moved in. I played 1 game day & had to scrap it all because Strubridge was one of my 1st houses that I made & apparently is has some issues. My neighbor's house though, the one shown here, was a beautiful 7 bedroom, 3 story house with detached garage. Hmmm ... I've never really seen that house before & I know I've never played it, so ... house swap time! I moved that family into Sturbridge & moved me & my dog into that house. If you look at the screenshot, upper right, you can see Sturbridge up on the hill. For a huge beautiful mansion, this house has the low-end everything in it. It's kinda funny. Tiny kitchen, cheap beds, the cheapest stove & fridge, cheap counters, tables, chairs ... outside it looks beautiful, but if I took a screenshot of the kitchen you'd think it was a screenshot from one of the tiny slum starter houses. Me thinks when I save up some money (I try to never use cheats in the game), I'm going to start upgrading stuff. Give it a kitchen & appliances that match the outside of the house, upgrade the beds ... everything. Several generations from now it'll look as beautiful on the inside as it does on the outside. My 1st generation Sim, Renesmee (yes, Twilight), has joined the athletic career (conveniently, the stadium is the closest venue to this house, so that worked out pretty well. Short commute time) which usually pays pretty well. She hasn't met a man yet & so far it's just her & her dog in this huge house. Someday soon though, this house will be full with 3 generations of happy Sims & dogs. When Pete got home I cooked dinner & took some steak out of the freezer for a great Tomato Roasted Garlic Steak that I'm going to make tonight. 1st day of fall Saturday & I can't wait! :)

Avalanche thunders into Russian village (2002):
A glacial avalanche in Russia buries a village on this day in 2002, killing more than 100 people.
The North Ossetia area of Russia was hard hit by floods in June 2002. These floods, along with an early and hot summer, proved to be a precursor to a much larger disaster in September. Large glaciers sit above the town of Vladikavkaz. With higher than normal temperatures in 2002, increased water runoff showed that these glaciers were beginning to melt and weaken.
On the afternoon of September 20, a 400-foot-tall chunk of ice broke from a large glacier and plunged down the side of the mountain. The resulting avalanche picked up speed, hitting close to 100 miles per hour at its fastest and traveling an astonishing 20 miles, destroying everything in its path. The village of Karmadon was completely buried by tons of stone and ice. Rescue efforts began immediately and continued for weeks. Twenty-seven people were pulled out alive. Finding victims' remains proved to be much more difficult work. Even weeks after the avalanche, less than half the150 people who had been reported missing had been found.
In total, the avalanche caused $20 million in damages. Had it traveled just a few miles further and hit Vladikavkaz, the death and damage toll would have been far worse.

Florida's spiny lobsters gather annually for what looks like a high-kicking dance! In the autumn, spiny lobsters leave their summer homes & take to the ocean floor, joining in a conga line of sorts. 50 or more lobsters line up & maintain bodily contact as they trample from the shallows to deeper water where they'll be protected from winter storms.

Keep sandwiches dry by spreading mustard or other condiments between the meat & cheese, not directly on the bread.

Harry Bliss (Jack Nicholson) is a dog trainer stuck in a miserable marriage. When creditors start hounding him for money he doesn't have, he's sure his life is falling apart. That is, until opera star Joan Spruance (Ellen Barkin) hires Harry and love begins to blossom. Two decades after their hit movie Five Easy Pieces, Nicholson, writer Carole Eastman and director Bob Rafelson team up again for this lighthearted romantic farce.

Spilth:
1: The act or an instance of spilling. 2a: Something spilled. b: Refuse or rubbish.
Ever done anything nice for your trash collector, that slinger of smelly spilth, that remover of refuse?"
"Spilth" is formed from the verb "spill" & the noun suffix "-th." This suffix comes to us from Old English & is used to indicate an act or process (as in "spilth" or the more familiar "growth") or a state or condition (as in "breadth" or "length"). The earliest known use of "spilth" is in Shakespeare's Timon of Athens (c. 1607-08): "When our vaults have wept/With drunken spilth of wine ..." To describe an act of spilling or something spilled, English-speakers today are much more likely to use the noun "spill" or sometimes "spillage," a word which, like "spilth," combines the verb "spill" with a suffix )"-age," this time borrowed from Old French) that can indicate an act or process.

Time your introduction carefully; wait, instead of interrupting others. When someone is engaged in serious conversation or obviously occupied, don't break in to introduce someone else. Wait for a more convenient moment.
