★ February 27, 2013 ★

Good morning everyone! I'm better rested finally. We went to bed earlier which is a good thing. I only cut my sleep short by 15 minutes this morning instead of several hours. Yesterday was almost a perfect day as far as getting things done is concerned. I worked, I played, I relaxed, I was productive. It was a very balanced day. It's very important to remain balanced. Too much work is bad for you. Too much play is bad for you. Being alone all the time or hardly ever having time to BE alone ... bad. It's important to make sure everything balances out as well as it can. I made a cheese omelet for breakfast & then sat down to watch some TV & crochet for a bit. Starting the day fed & relaxed is always a great start. I went to work on eBay, went through the mail once the mailman got here, & then hit pay dirt when working on eBay. The final box that I'm going through & listing one by one is a mix of stuff. Mostly books & magazines that I no longer use. At the bottom of the box, I found a stack of my Bond pattern books (for my knitting machine). I FOUND THEM! You have no idea how excited I was to find those. I went through them all, added the patterns to the queue that I'll be making & safely stored the rest in my desk. That's everything now for my knitting machine ... all has been recovered except for ONE thing. My premium carriage. I miss it! I have no idea where it could have gone or how it could have disappeared. My knitting machine was out of service & packed away for only 1 year in the entire time I've owned it & during that 1 year the carriage disappeared. It's hard to replace, too. I've looked all over for one & I just can't find one for sale anywhere. Since I was so happily distracted with finding the Bond pattern books & since it did take a while to go through them all, code them into my Bond machine knitting Web page, & get them sorted & put away, I did swap that out with with another relaxing item I had planned on later in the day. I just don't have enough room to interject stuff into my days without something else being removed in its place. Speaking of not enough time in a day, a small chunk of my day goes to facebook. Yeah, I know ... most people think screwing around on facebook is only just screwing around ... but since I don't watch the local news or spend hours on the phone with friends, facebook is my only connection with the outside world & I dedicate 2 hours to it ever day. 2 hours a day is the equivalent of going out to lunch with ONE friend & then watching 1 hour of the nightly news on TV. With facebook, during that 2 hours I get to keep up with ALL my friends, the top news headlines both locally & nationally (not via rumor, but posted by the actual news sites), get in a little fun game time with my friends, & see the weather report. To do all that outside of facebook would take hours per day. Many more than 2. Of course time with a friend live & in person is always better, but after all that fuel & time, you only got to spend time with ONE person ... maybe 2 if you met for lunch. Phone calls? They can last a very long time & amongst all the dead air & chatter, there's only a few minutes of really interesting news & updates. On facebook, people post the "headlines" without the 1 hour of chatter surrounding it. There are a few people I enjoy speaking with on the phone or going out to lunch with. They're the closest people in my life. The rest, although their friendship is important to me & I'm glad they're a part of my life, I prefer to keep up with on facebook ... otherwise I'd be on the phone 15 hours a day. LOL! This blog is just the opposite of what's on facebook. This is where I do my chattering for the day. Get everything off my chest. It more of a diary. I share it with the world because I've got nothing to hide & my friends & family who read it actually are interested in how my day went beyond just the "headline" of the day. I have over 100 readers per day. Some of you I know, most of you I don't ... but I'm glad you're here. It's always nice to know you're talking to someone ... otherwise, you're just talking to yourself & at some point the nice men with the white coats come to visit. :) I checked Google+ yesterday but there's never much on there. 1 minute of scrolling & I give up & close it. It never really took off I guess. I wasn't able to go to the station for training last night, but in place of that I did work for hours on FD stuff from here at the house. Just because I couldn't make it there doesn't mean I didn't want to do all I could. I made a lot of updates on our roster, updated our Website, & way too much other stuff to list. Let's just say I got a LOT of FD stuff done. There's still more I need to do, but I need to do it at the station, not from home. When I finished with the FD stuff, I sent an e-mail off to the Chiefs so they know what was done & can let me know if I missed anything & then I jumped in the shower. It was in the shower that I realized I forgot to attach the meeting minutes to the e-mail I sent them. I KNEW I was forgetting a file. In my mind I knew there should be 3 files attached to that e-mail I sent. There were 2. For the life of me I couldn't figure out what the 3rd one was supposed to be. Brain fart. In the shower it hit me. DUH! Sheesh ... I sent a 2nd e-mail WITH the file attached this time when I got out of the shower. At this point Pete wasn't home yet so I figured I could get some Sims time in. I loaded the game only to have a message pop up that there's a game update. Aw crap. Those are usually large. Yep ... 1.2Gb with both boys home means a SLOW 1.2Gb download. I started the download, cooked & ate dinner, watched NCIS with Pete, put the dog out, headed to bed, played 5 Card Slingo, brought the dog back in, & a minute after all that the download & install finally completed. HA! Well, at least the game is updated for the next time I actually make it that far (which isn't often these days). Updating the game isn't as fun as playing the game, but it's more productive than playing the game (in some sort of way), so it counts. Playing would have been nice though after a long evening of FD work. This is why I said that overall it was an almost perfect day. Almost because 1) Even though I did a lot of work for the FD, I wasn't "AT" the FD during training, & 2) Even though Sims updated, I didn't actually get to play. This morning I checked my bank & updated Quicken for the week. I was bad this pay period. I spent a lot of money. OUCH! Tomorrow is Bella's (my cat) 1st birthday!

3. Turn your device 90 degree clockwise (now it should be in landscape mode and home button on the left hand side), again keep it upright, and put the current bottom edge (long edge) on the flat surface, then press Calibrate button to calibrate the landscape mode.
4. Put the back of the device against the surface, then press Calibration button to calibrate the face-up mode
5. You are ready to go!

I understand a man from teh South Bronx came up to Reagan & said, "You know I haven't tasted food in 3 days." And Reagan said, "Don't worry; it tastes just the same."

Little children seem to have an innate sense of the idea of fairness even apart from opposite conditioning experiences. There are vast differences in how fairness is defined & achieved, but there is almost universal awareness of the idea.

Video recreates the crime (1991):
Artie Mitchell is shot to death by his brother Jim in his Corte Madera, California, house. When police responding to a 911 call by Artie's girlfriend arrived at the house they found Jim wandering aimlessly outside carrying a rifle. Artie had been shot multiple times in the chest and head and was already dead.
The Mitchell brothers had made a fortune in the pornography business. They also owned a popular strip club in San Francisco and had wild lifestyles to match their profession. Despite their success, the brothers were constantly fighting, often in violent physical encounters. Jim Mitchell claimed that his brother's death resulted from one of these fights.
However, based on the 911 call, the prosecution argued that it was first-degree, premeditated murder. Five out of the eight total shots from the rifle could be heard in the background of the 911 call with a 30-second gap between two of the shots. Thus, authorities maintained that Jim had shot the already-wounded Artie to death in cold blood.
At the trial in 1992, prosecutors sought to introduce an animated video that reconstructed the events of February 27, 1991. This video showed Jim shooting Artie with a final shot to the head. The defense attorneys vehemently objected to this evidence, maintaining that it was impossible to know which shots came at what time. Despite this major problem with the re-creation, the judge admitted the video.
Although the video was shown to the jury, the defense attacked the prosecution's forensic experts and forced them to admit that pure speculation was at the heart of the video presentation. In the end, the jury only convicted Jim Mitchell of manslaughter. He was sentenced to six years in prison.
Computer-generated video re-creations of crime scenes are being used more often today. The public got a taste of their quality during the O.J. Simpson trial, when several were presented on television news shows. However, they remain controversial. With so much left to interpretation, courts are sometimes hesitant to admit re-creations as evidence.

What's the best treatment for creaky, arthritic knees?
(a) Sitting down
(b) Taking glucosamine suppliments
(c) Doing tai chi
(d) Taking shark cartilage pills
Answer: (c). In controlled experiments, glucosamine & shark cartilage have failed to reliably relieve knee pain, but a 2011 review of multiple studies of tai chi - that famously flowing series of stretches & poses - concluded that it's generally effective at controlling pain & improving physical function.

Would you believe that the can opener was invented 30 years after the invention of canned food? Before Robert Yeates made the obvious device in 1855, people had to pry open cans with a knife or bayonet.
