√ February 16, 2013 √

Happy Saturday everyone! Yesterday started out normal. After blogging I went through the mail, cleaned the bathroom sink, dusted the bedroom walls, cleaned the dining table & small appliances, did the dishes, dusted the Wii, neatened my 1st bookshelf & started looking at The Learning Companion Vol. II & then followed up with some research on the Internet on relationship issues (nothing I have to deal with luckily, because it was how to live with a spouse who's narcissistic). I finished the housework with sweeping the utility room & then had a nice phone call with a friend, went to work on eBay & then Pete got home from his job interview in Denton. He got the job. Less than 24 hours after finishing his resume & beginning the search, he was successful. Good pay & since it's in Denton, that means I can FINALLY move to my favorite place in all of Texas ... Providence Village! I'm so excited, I already started looking at houses out there & it's twice as much house as we have here for the same price. Additionally, they're MUCH newer than this house. This one was built in the early 80s, those are built in 2002 & up to as recent as a couple years ago. Not bad for the same price, huh? And they're my favorite style, too. Beautiful. I'm VERY hopeful. :) When Pete got home he picked something up & invited me to go with him for the rest of the errands. I didn't quite finish my work on eBay, but got out for the fresh air. Great choice! We got to the bank & they were already closed. My bank used to be open until 7 on Fridays, then 6, now they close at 5. Customer service is taking a nosedive all over the place. Businesses are barely open 40 hours a week anymore IF that. Some, only 23 (Social Security office). Since that was a bust, he asked me if I had eaten yet. Nope, not a bite all day. We started towards food ... unknown destination. He then had the idea to stop at Half Price Books. WOOHOO! My favorite! I was bad. $100 & a large box of books later, we finally left the store. I got some REALLY great stuff! I was so happy! Food time. We wandered across the highway to one of my favorite restaurants, Texas Roadhouse. Packed. 45 minute wait. Abort mission. Next. We ended up at Golden Corral & ate so much that neither of us could move well. A box full of cool books & stuffed. What a night! What a great way to celebrate the day we met! When we got home Pete went straight to bed. He was in a double coma. His "I spent HOW much money?!" coma doubled with his food coma. He slept about 15-16 hours straight through. While he was sleeping I unpacked all my cool new books, sorted them, made room on my bookshelf for them, & then proceeded to catalog all the contents of each book. Yes, I'm OCD organized to a fault. I have documents that list EVERY song on EVERY CD I own, lists of EVERY crochet, knit, grid, & doily pattern ... EVERY recipe from EVERY cookbook (and I have a LOT of cookbooks). Every DIY project in every DIY book, etc. These are huge documents & backed up because to retype them, from the size they are now, would take forever. I finished entering all the info around 3:30 in the morning & finally went to bed. Pete woke me up when he finally got up & we headed out to the bank again. We stopped to get fuel & then missed the bank. AGAIN! Looks like maybe Monday I can pay my bills. Sheesh! I'm supposed to do this on the 15th, but I'm going to be a little late this time. The payments won't be late, but I'm just used to doing this on the 15th. Since that was a bust (again), I asked if he'd like to check out McKinney Restore. Like a 2nd hand shop but for your house. Cool place! We bought a very nice desk for Kyle since he needed one for his room. We came home, unloaded that, got it set up, & then Josh called. He forgot to write his hours on my board (again) so he ended up waiting 45 minutes after he got off work for us to get there, then another 45 minutes while we shopped. When we got home we put the groceries away & Josh finally remembered to write his hours on the board. LOL! During all of this running around the FD got toned out to 2 calls. 1 med call & 1 smoke investigation. There's something I'm going to miss. If we move to Denton, my FD days are over. The Denton FD has SO many requirements to join. Physical tests that I would have had trouble passing back when I was young. Speaking of young, I'm also about a decade past their age limit to be on the Denton FD. At least you know when you call them, you're getting young, strong, trained people. They don't fool around over there. It's nothing like the small rural volunteer departments that I've gotten used to. I don't think Denton FD even has an auxiliary for me to join. If they do, there's no mention of it on their Website. So, here I am finally starting my scheduled day. My scheduled day is SUPPOSED to start at 7:a. It's currently 6:p. Only 11 hours behind. Green Bucket Day for Pete & I tomorrow (don't ask).

Buy tickets in bulk. Popcorn isn't the only thing at the movies. Tickets cost about $8 on average. Frugal cinephiles should buy them in advance. Regal Entertainment Group, the country's largest theater chain, sells blocks of 50 for $6.50 each. Potential savings: $72/yr for a family of 4 that goes to the movies once a month.

Jeff Gordon becomes youngest Daytona winner (1997):
On February 16, 1997, 25-year-old Jeff Gordon claims his first Daytona 500 victory, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the 200-lap, 500-mile National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) event, dubbed the "Super Bowl of stock car racing." Driving his No. 24 Chevrolet Monte Carlo for the Hendrick Motorsports racing team, Gordon recorded an average speed of 148.295 mph and took home prize money of more than $377,000. According to NASCAR.com, Gordon was "a veritable babe in a field that included 27 drivers older than 35, 16 at least 40." Gordon's Hendrick teammates Terry Labonte and Ricky Craven finished the race second and third, respectively.
Gordon was born August 4, 1971, in Vallejo, California, and became involved in racing as a child. In 1993, he competed in his first full season of Winston Cup series (now known as the Sprint Cup), NASCAR's top racing series, and was named Rookie of the Year. He went on to win the Winston series championship in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. Following his first victory at the Daytona 500 in 1997, Gordon won the prestigious race, which serves as the NASCAR season-opener, again in 1999 and 2005.
At the other end of the Daytona age spectrum from Gordon is 50-year-old Bobby Allison, who on February 14, 1988, became the oldest driver to win the Daytona 500. He had an average speed of 137.531 mph and collected over $202,000 in prize money. Allison's son Davey came in second place in that race. Bobby Allison, who was born on December 3, 1937, in Florida, drove in his first Daytona 500 in 1961 and went on to win the race in 1978 and 1982, in addition to his 1988 victory.
The first-ever Daytona 500 was held on February 22, 1959, at the then brand-new Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. A crowd of more than 40,000 was on hand to witness the 59 cars that started the event. Lee Petty narrowly defeated Johnny Beauchamp to win the race with an average speed of 135.521 mph. He collected prize money of some $19,000. By comparison, Matt Kenseth won the 2009 Daytona 500 with an average speed of 132.816 mph, and took home prize money of more than $1.5 million.

"Seek 1st to understand" involves a very deep shift in paradigm. We typically seek 1st to be understood. Most people don't listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. They're either speaking or preparing to speak. They're filtering everything through their own paradigms, reading their autobiography into other people's lives.
