★ Day We Met 2013 ★

On this day back in 1992 I walked into a bar that I used to frequent called Fleming's Place in Pearl River, N.Y. & someone called me by my full name. Maiden name that is. I had been married once, it lasted 3 yeas. I was single now, but had kept used my married name. Who would know my maiden name? I mean I was next door to my hometown, but still, it had been so long since anyone used my maiden name (including me) that it startled me. I turned around & there was a man I didn't recognize, but he seemed to recognize me. I was wearing a T-shirt that had "The Rules" on it. (Rules for men ... Rule #1. A man can never know all of the rules" ... etc). It was the day after Valentine's Day & mine had been less than stellar. He introduced himself & we spent the night talking. It seemed we had always been close in some way. We grew up just blocks from each other, went to the same school system, moved away from our hometown & had moved to the same towns, always not far from each other. he remembered me from the local pool when I was younger, he remember my swimsuit, he remembered my bicycle ... 21 years later we're married, have 2 children, & live 1,400 miles away from where we met. Yesterday was insane, but at least I managed to finally do some laundry, Windex the bedroom mirror, straighten the dining chairs, clean the small appliances, unload the dishwasher, change the afghan on the living room chair, do small pickups around the house, & sweep the bathroom. I went to work on eBay & after that it was past midnight & time to start the nighttime routine. We went to bed so late that I would still be asleep if I had slept 8 hours, but Pete woke me up & is going on an interview in Denton. I looked at houses out there, nothing exciting except 1 that looks like a Victorian-style bed & breakfast & costs over half a million dollars. Everything in our price range is "eh". I did of course look at Providence Village again. I'd love to live there & if he gets a job in Denton at least we'd he'd be working in the same county as Providence Village, that's why we never moved there, the commute would have been way too long from there to Richardson, which is in Dallas county. I'm glad we met (again) 21 years ago today & I'm glad he said hello. If I hadn't gone to that bar that night & if he didn't say hello, who knows where I would be now. Not here, not with Pete, & ... well, obviously NOTHING would be the same.

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now & then doesn't hurt!

Dale Earnhardt wins first Daytona 500 (1998):
After two decades of trying, stock-car racing great Dale Earnhardt finally wins his first Daytona 500, NASCAR’s premier event, on this day in 1998.
Earnhardt was born April 29, 1951, in Kannapolis, North Carolina. His father was a race car driver and Dale dropped out of high school to pursue racing. In 1979, he was named the Winston Cup (now called the NEXTEL Cup) Rookie of the Year. The following year, Earnhardt captured his first Winston Cup championship, a title he went on to win again in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994. Earnhardt developed a reputation as a fierce competitor and was nicknamed “The Intimidator.” He was also credited with helping to turn NASCAR racing into one of America’s most popular professional sports.
Despite his success on the Winston Cup circuit, victory at the Daytona 500, dubbed the “Super Bowl of NASCAR,” eluded Earnhardt for years due to crashes, mechanical problems and other issues. However, on February 15, 1998, he finally tasted success at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. That day, he drove his No. 3 black Chevrolet to first place and over a million dollars in prize money. After the race, crew members from each racing team lined up to shake Earnhardt’s hand. He then drove onto the infield and spun his car in the grass.
Earnhardt’s career ended tragically on February 18, 2001, when he died during a crash in the last lap of the Daytona 500. It was his 23rd time at the race. Earnhardt’s son, Dale Jr., finished the race in second place, and went on to become a superstar in the racing world like his father. He won his first Daytona 500 in 2004.
