February 22, 2013

Good morning! Yesterday when I got the mail I was happy to see that my new firefighter necklace had arrived! It's SO pretty! There's a pic of it below, not bad for $10 huh? I did a lot of housework yesterday. All of my work plus I was feeling nice & did 3 of Kyle's chores for him & 2 of Josh's. I cleaned the tub, neatened one of the dresser drawers, fed the pets, straightened the dining chairs, had Josh sort & organize the cabinet where they keep their pots, pans, plates, etc, I did the dishes, wiped down the counters, swapped out the afghan on my living room chair, dusted my PC, cataloged & put away 2 books out of a huge box that I now how of a bunch of books that I thought had gotten
lost forever, did small pickups around the house, compacted the trash (it only LOOKED full), & cleaned out my truck. I finished just in time to go get Josh from work. When Josh got in the truck, I put it in reverse, looked both ways for vehicles &/or pedestrians, backed out & due to the length of my truck, can only ever get out just far enough that I'm diagonal across the lane but have enough room to put it back into drive, cut the wheel all the way the other direction & go. Well, after I backed up, I had just stopped, still had it in reverse & was still looking in my side mirror when I suddenly see the Cadillac Escalade behind me put it in reverse. Uh oh! "BEEP BEEP BEEP ..." I tried to get her attention, but she just hit the gas & ::: SMACK :::. Crap. We both pull back into our parking spaces, get out, check our vehicles ... hers was 100%. Not even a scuff mark. Mine on the other hand, rear bumper pushed in. Driver's side. Sonofa ... This happened once before. Someone backed out of a parking space & hit my truck in the exact same spot on the rear bumper & it pushed it in. This lady came over apologizing & saying it was all her fault. She saw my bumper & of course was thinking that "I" was thinking "Escalade hit me ... Cha-CHING!" I looked at her & said "Nah, this happened once before. All I need is a tree, & a strap & it'll be good as new." She was shocked. "Are you SURE? Really??" "Yep, I'm sure. We're good." She grabbed my hand & shook it & thanked me profusely. Is it really that rare for people to be nice these days? I'll bet she was thinking I must not have insurance or something. Why else would I pass up an opportunity to sue someone in an Excalade who was at fault? Well, I'm fully insured ... I just don't see the need to sue over something that can be fixed by strapping it to the tree in my front yard. When she was done thanking me we both turned & started walking back to our vehicles. I turned & said "I'll let you you got first." She smiled & said "I was just going to say that YOU can go first." I laughed & said "No, I insist ... after YOU!" She laughed. She pulled out, I pulled out (not at the same time this time), & once we were out on the street & sitting at the light waiting to make a left onto Eldorado, I noticed the vehicle in the lane next to me (it's a double left) was her. She was texting away on her phone. I turned & joked to Josh that she's probably texting her husband saying that someone backed into HER. The light turned green, we went & I was in front by about a car length in the right lane. She was in the left still. A little while up the road & she slowly passed me. Now she was about a car length in front of me in the left lane & I suddenly see her bounce off the curb on the left side. Hmmm ... either she was reading the reply text, still texting, or she's just a really bad driver. I think I'll just drop back a little, give her space, & let her go on her merry way. Now ... what to do with my back bumper. The last time this happened I had a friend with a winch to help. I don't have a winch available. I'd hate to strap my truck to the tree, hit the gas too hard & tear my rear bumper clean OFF. Hmmm. ANYway, I got home with Josh & went to work on eBay. I'm finally down to the last huge box of stuff to sell & now have a huge box of stuff to sort & put away that I'm keeping. When I opened the final large box, I found the strangest stuff in there. Along with all the books that I knew were in there, I found other miscellaneous stuff that had long ago disappeared. A brand new cordless drill, 2 hammers, a caulking gun ... what the? This is odd. So besides one last large box of stuff to sell, I now have another large box of "stuff". Books that I am NOT selling that have to be cataloged & put up, random crafting supplies, collectibles, all kinds of stuff. This is going to take a while to get all this stuff put away. A LONG while probably. ::: sigh ::: When I finished on eBay & also finished sorting stuff I'm keeping into the box of stuff I'm keeping vs. stuff I'm selling, I checked facebook, took my turns in the facebook games I enjoy playing & then picked Kyle up from the library. When we got back I did some research on my PC to find out exactly what motherboard I have in this system & log it into my MiComputer iPhone app. I've got a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P. Had peanut butter on toast for lunch I then settled down in the living room to get some quilt crocheting done until Pete got home from work. After that it was the nighttime routine & here I am.

Although 1st believed to be poisonous by the early settlers of the Northern Hemisphere, the tomato is now considered to be the most popular veggie in America.

Contrary to myth, George Washington's false teeth weren't made of wood. Over his life, he wore dentures made from gold, hippo & elephant ivory, & even human teeth.

Cut the cable cord. 5 years ago, watching your favorite shows without a cable box practically required a computer science degree. Today, it's pretty straightforward. Step 1: Invest in a streaming player, like Roku or Apple TV. These simple devices (which cost less than $100) connect your Internet to your TV, making the new viewing experience identical to the old boob tube. Step 2: Using your streaming device, access the content services that best fit your need: Netflix ($8/mo) streams episodes just a few days after they air on TV, but includes commercials. Step 3: Can't find a particular show you want to watch? For a few extra bucks, Amazon Instant video & Apple's iTunes let you access episodes & movies that aren't offered through subscription services. Potential savings: $700/yr.

Gang commits largest robbery in British history (2006):
In the early morning hours of February 22, 2006, a gang of at least six men, some of them armed, steal £53 million from the Securitas bank depot in Kent, Great Britain. It was the largest such theft in British history.
The plot was well planned. On the evening before, two men, dressed as police officers, pulled the depot manager, Colin Dixon, over as he was driving in nearby Stockbury. They convinced him to get out of his car, and forced him into their vehicle. At about the same time, two more men visited Dixon’s home and picked up Dixon’s wife and eight-year-old son; eventually all three Dixons were taken to a farm in West Kent, where the gang threatened their lives if Colin refused to cooperate with the robbery.
The Dixons were then forced to go with the gang to the Securitas depot, where Colin helped them evade the building’s security system. The gang proceeded to tie up 14 depot staff members, load the £53 million into a truck and, at about 2:15 a.m. on February 22, drive away. No one was injured in the robbery. Eventually, one depot worker was able to contact police, who launched a massive search for the culprits. As the stolen money was all in used bills, it was difficult to trace. Securitas and its insurers posted a £2 million reward for information leading to the arrests of the robbers and return of the money.
The next day, three people, one man and two women, were arrested in connection with the case; one had attempted to deposit £6,000 into a local bank that was bound in Securitas depot tape. However, all three were later released without being charged. Police continue to investigate the case, and more than 30 people have been arrested, though there have been no convictions. Police are also said to have recovered nearly £20 million of the stolen money.
