• Our 20th Anniversary •

Good morning everyone. I hope you're all having a great Saturday. I had a really good day yesterday from start to finish. I made a cheese omelet for breakfast, dusted the bathroom accents, de-cobwebbed the bedroom walls, fed the pets, went to work on eBay & listed a bunch of nice stuff & made 4 sales, checked facebook, opened up the Knit Wit that I got on eBay, a piece of my past, sorted a large bag of yarn that was given to my by the same lady who gave me the 32" television that we now have in the bedroom, found an EMS pattern & converted it to a grid that will turn out to be a 7' x 7' afghan when it's done, & then made my 1st square on this thing since the late 70s / early 80s. I forgot how much fun this thing is
& fast too! It's small enough to be portable & even though I had planned on working on it only an hour a week, I found that when I'm Simming, I can make a square in a matter of minutes ... so at each milestone in my game, I take a micro-break from gaming & spit out another square. I got the mail, updated my Win8 apps from the store & then loaded up Sims. I added a nice hallway to Breckenridge & then loaded up
Urban Legend, created by a talented other. My 1st gen Sim Olivia turned in more lifetime wish points when her grandson aged up to school-age. She now has the fireproof homestead which means they can finally light & keep lit, the fireplace that's in their dining room. The 1st time they tried to light it, it caused a fire & hasn't been lit again until now. Her husband Kenji Midden also turned in more lifetime wish points when his grandson aged up to school-age & have a lot of them due to being happy & successful. He managed to fulfill his lifetime wish of being a Creature-Robot Cross Breeder before he retired, so he got the age freeze potion & froze himself at 68. He's now immortal. Olivia & Kenji Midden's son Michael (2nd gen) aged up into a teen & then an adult ... gaining the genius & neat traits. He decided to become a world renowned surgeon. He mastered the logic skill & when his son aged up to school-age he turned in his lifetime wish points & got a food replicator & Simmunity. The season rolled over into fall with a cold 52° at midnight. Michael graduated from school prom king & most likely to be mediocre. He reconnected with his old friend Lakeshia Parrott & they married & had a son, Mike Midden (3rd gen). Mike hates the outdoors & is a heavy sleeper. A Virgo who likes hip hop, goopy cabonara, & the color Irish green. When Mike aged up to school-age, he also gained the mooch trait. When Pete came home from work I closed the Sims & stopped making squares on the Knit Wit. I made cheeseburgers for all of us for dinner, we watched the 2 hour season finale of Fringe, & then I came in & played Words w/ Friends & headed into the bedroom to play 5 Card Slingo in bed & then go to sleep. A happy, perfect day. I was in a great mood. That means the universe is off balance. Something was going to happen. When the phone rang while it was still dark out, I knew what it was. Very sad news. Pete's dad passed this morning just before 5:30a CST. He had lung cancer that had spread throughout his body & was in his spine & brain. He was in the hospital due to a fall & they made him as comfortable as possible until the end. Today, January 19th, is now not only our wedding anniversary, but also the anniversary of Pete losing his dad. I'm relieved that he's no longer in pain & also relieved that Pete's mom & our daughter Eve don't have to go through what my mom went through with my grandmother. My grandmother also was taken by cancer & she hung on for 2 years. My mom had to set up a hospital bed in the living room & quit her job to stay home & care for her. 2 years of spoon feeding her 1 bite at a time throughout the day because she didn't want to eat. My grandmother was bedridden for the whole 2 years & had forgotten who my mom was. She would cry & ask why she's a prisoner, she would ask who my mom was & get angry because there was a stranger with her. She would bite & scratch. She was on the maximum amount of morphine the doctors could give her without killing her & it still didn't stop the pain. She would cry in her sleep & cry out in pain when she was awake. 2 years of that. I'm grateful that Pete's mom & our daughter Eve didn't have to go through that. I'm grateful that Pete's dad wasn't in pain for long. We're all going to miss him. We saw him at Christmas & everyone got to spend time with him, talk, & hug him before we all headed back home. This is a scary moment for me because Pete's dad is the 1st of our 4 parents to pass. This makes me realize that I'm getting old. The circle of life is closing in. This is a 3 day weekend for students.

1st McDonald's drive-through opens in Beijing (2007):
On this day in 2007, Beijing, China, the capital city of the planet's most populous nation, gets its first drive-through McDonald's restaurant. The opening ceremony for the new two-story fast-food eatery, located next to a gas station, included traditional Chinese lion dancers and a Chinese Ronald McDonald. According to a report from The Associated Press at the time of the Beijing drive-through's debut: "China's double-digit economic growth has created a burgeoning market for cars, fast food and other consumer goods. The country overtook Japan last year to become the world's second-biggest vehicle market after the U.S., with 7.2 million cars sold, a 37 percent growth."
Fast-food chains from foreign countries first came to China in 1987, with the opening of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. The home of the Big Mac and Happy Meal arrived in China three years later. In 2005, McDonald's, the world's largest fast-food chain, launched its first drive-through restaurant in China, in the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong province, near Hong Kong. The Beijing drive-through was McDonald's 16th Chinese drive-through. In September 2008, Chinadaily.com reported that other than America, "China is the No. 1 growth market for McDonald's, with 960 restaurants and over 60,000 employees."
McDonald's opened its first drive-through in the U.S. in 1975. Before there were drive-throughs there were drive-in restaurants, where customers would place their orders at curbside speakers. Servers known as carhops, who often wore rollerskates, then would bring food orders directly to customers' cars. Standard drive-in fare included hamburgers, hotdogs, root beer and milkshakes. Drive-ins reached the height of their popularity in the 1950s. Today, America's largest chain of drive-in restaurants is Sonic, which started as a hamburger and root beer stand known as Top Hat Drive-In in 1953 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. It changed its named to Sonic in 1959 and today has more than 3,500 drive-ins.

Dial up cell savings. If you live with teens (or text like one): Sign up for an unlimited message plan (about $20/mo). The average teen taps out 3,417 texts per month. Even if your current plan affords 3,000 texts, that extra 417 a month - at a cost of .20c each - will make your phone company LOL. Potential savings: $760 per year in the scenario above.

Word paradigm comes from the Greek. It was originally a scientific term, & is more commonly used today to mean a model, theory, perception, assumption, or frame of reference. In a more general sense, it's the way we "see" the world - not in terms of our visual sense of sight, but in terms of perceiving, understanding, interpreting.
