● January 17, 2013 ●

Happy Thursday! I had an egg salad sandwich for breakfast yesterday at NINE PM. That was just insane. Things had to change. So ... after dinner with Pete (he brought a roast chicken home!) & some television, we went to bed & I just couldn't sleep. I kept thinking of how insane it was that I didn't eat for the 1st time until 9:p. Something had to be done. Well, a couple things had to be done. 1) I need to smack Josh in the head. He lives here rent free, he gets rides to & from work, he has a phone that he doesn't pay for, electricity, heat, a kitchen, food, etc, etc, etc. So what does he do last night? He uses up the LAST of our propane to grill steaks. He sits down & has a nice steak dinner with Kyle. ?! With KYLE?! Pete & I have been supporting him for TWO YEARS & he has a steak dinner with Kyle? I hadn't eaten since the night before & he didn't even offer. Didn't even ask if I'd like any ... after using MY grill, the last of MY propane, MY lighter to light the grill, MY dining room table, MY plates, MY silverware, MY electricity to see ... I could go on & on. Yet I starved until 9:p while he shared a nice steak dinner with Kyle. Josh has GOT to GO! That's just plain rude, inconsiderate, & stupid. What an ungrateful ... nevermind. OK, that's enough of Josh. The other thing that needs to be done ... 2) Rewrite my schedule & change my daily habits. I couldn't sleep. Between Josh & my lack of getting anything done this week, I just could NOT get to sleep. I finally gave up, got up, & turned on my PC. I rewrote my entire schedule. I changed everything. Now, instead of having a dozen tabs open across my browser, I have ONE. Instead of being on facebook all day, I'll only check in ONCE a day (I'm going to try anyway). Instead of playing Words w/ Friends all day, I'll play ONCE a day. 16 hours in a day, 16 line items in the schedule. Everything marked off at 1 hour increments. Some things take less, some things take more ... at the end of the day it'll all even out. Things that are indefinite (like crafting), I set a timer for. The rest ... I just do the best I can. All the crafting that's now in there is for 1 of 3 reasons: 1) Decor, 2) Relaxation, 3) Sale. Based on the wide array of crafts (6 different ones), I can have relaxation every day of the week while doing a different craft so I don't get bored, I can have stuff that I'll wear myself, decor for the house, & stuff to sell on eBay. I've got some great ideas & a lot of great inventory. Let the crafting for fun & profit begin! When I was done rewriting my schedule, hours had gone by, but it was perfect! I couldn't believe how well it came out. Now I was exhausted. I was before, but now I was really tired. I went back to bed at 4:30 in the morning. I still couldn't sleep. WTH? I was still awake when Pete left to drive Josh to work at 5:20 in the morning. I was still awake when Pete got back at 6:10. I was going to just pull an all-nighter at this point, get up  start my day. My schedule is SUPPOSED to start at 6:a anyway, so why not? Pete convinced me to stay in bed a little longer. I fell asleep at 7. My alarm went off at 9. I am SO tired right now! Anyway, I got as far as breakfast yesterday & that was it ... now, with a new schedule & a new plan, I start today. I didn't get up at 6, but I never do. Pete's hours don't really work with that even though it's one of my new year's resolutions to try to get Pete to come home earlier & get to bed earlier. I've fixed the 1st entry in AnyTime, sorted seed beads for an hour & barely made a dent in a bag of 2,000 & now I'm here .. at 10:30a instead of 8p like yesterday. I'd say that's progress you can see already! This was always supposed to be the morning edition. Then it floated into the afternoon edition. Then the evening edition. Now it's back to the morning edition. WOOHOO! No school Monday.

Borrowing strength builds weakness. It builds weakness in the borrower because it reinforces dependence on external factors to get things done. It builds weakness in the person forced to acquiesce, stunting the development of independent reasoning, growth, & internal discipline. And finally, it builds weakness in the relationship. Fear replaces cooperation, & both people involved become more arbitrary & defensive.

Earthquake rocks Los Angeles (1994):
On this day in 1994, an earthquake rocks Los Angeles, California, killing 54 people and causing billions of dollars in damages. The Northridge quake (named after the San Fernando Valley community near the epicenter) was one of the most damaging in U.S. history.
It was 4:31 a.m. when the 6.7-magnitude quake struck the San Fernando Valley, a densely populated area of Los Angeles located 20 miles northeast of the city's downtown. With an epicenter 12 miles beneath the earth's surface, the earthquake caused the collapse of several apartment buildings. At the Northridge Meadows complex, 16 people died, all of whom lived on the first floor, when the weak stucco structure fell down on them as they slept.
Given the strength and location of the earthquake, it was fortunate that the death toll was not far higher. Two key factors were critical in reducing the casualties. First, the quake struck in the middle of the night while nearly everyone was at home in their beds. A mall parking lot in the Valley collapsed, but no one was killed because it was entirely empty. Several highways also suffered critical failures, but only one police officer died, when his vehicle plunged off an overpass. The other key factor was that the city's building and safety codes were strengthened following the 1971 Sylmar quake that collapsed the San Fernando Veterans Hospital. Every building constructed after the new regulations were implemented stayed intact.
Still, the quake caused a huge amount of property damage over a wide area, especially in the beach community of Santa Monica, even though it was relatively far from the epicenter. As much of Santa Monica stands on soil that is less solid than bedrock, it suffered severe ground movement during the earthquake. The partial collapse of the Santa Monica freeway snarled traffic in Los Angeles for months. All told, it is estimated that the earthquake was responsible for $20 billion in damages.

Memorable men with mustaches top 10:
  1. Salvador Dali (crazy)
  2. Rollie Fingers (curly)
  3. Wyatt Earp (imperial)
  4. Adolph Hitler (evil)
  5. Charlie Chaplin ("toothbrush")
  6. Albert Einstein (shaggy)
  7. Che Guevara (stoner-dude)
  8. Super Marie (big & bushy)
  9. Tom Selleck (macho)
  10. Santa Claus (icon)
Not to be outdone by the men, the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo also wore an impressive mustache & often emphasized it in her self-portraits - hairy & proud of it!

Now I don't understand this. According to a new poll ... it said that 91% of Americans say that they lie regularly. My question: How in the hell can you believe that poll?

Planning for retirement is like vowing to eat carrot sticks because they'll help you live longer; most of us still reach for the fries. Choose a goal that would change your life in the near future. Maybe you want to move to a larger apartment, go to graduate school, or switch careers.

Some people thing "lip sweaters" are sexy; others see them as hairy "food filters."

Why do bakers toss in a free bread if you buy a dozen? It's certainly not out of the goodness of their hearts. According to medieval English law, a baker could have his hand chopped off with an axe as punishment for shortchanging a customer. Tossing in an extra loaf of bread seemed to be a good idea to keep one's hand.
