August 21, 2012

Isn't that a beautiful view? I've never been to California, but I've heard it's beautiful & from the photos, it sure looks like it is. I would have a very hard time with the political views there because I'm the opposite of what the norm seems to be there, but oh it's pretty! Texas seems to be a very nice political fit for me though, & it's nice here. The people are friendly (to strangers at least LOL!), the weather, although a little toasty in the summer is much nicer in the winter than up north, & it's not as crowded as Jersey. You have room to stretch out here. In Jersey, if you stretch out you invade someone's space that's right next to you. It's funny how in Jersey, you have so many people packed together per square mile, yet they all are a bit ... anti-social. Yet in Texas, everyone is friendly but there is so much space between everyone ... maybe that's why. Maybe everyone is the way they are in Jersey because they're so cramped & everyone is so friendly down here because they don't have people on top of them every second. I lived in Manhattan for a little while & non one knew their neighbors. I mean your immediate neighbors. You had an apartment on either side of you, above you, & below you. That's 4 families right up against you & if you could name just ONE person from any of those 4 families, it would be rare. Everyone is in such a hurry, everyone is so private. I always dreamed of having a nice little house with a white picket fence, in a nice little neighborhood. I have it (although I never did get the white picket fence). I love this neighborhood, I have one of the best next door neighbors a person can have, & I like to call this Mayberry. I like being able to keep the doors & windows open & not live in fear. I also like the fact that since this IS Texas, I can have a loaded .357 by my side just in case. Did I ever mention that I found the real Mayberry? The town that Mayberry was modeled after is in N.C. & it's a little town called Mount Airy. It looks a lot like where I live now, so I wasn't too far off. After working all day yesterday I finally sit down & knit another panel on the blanket. After that I still have some time left to get a little Sims time in, so I choose a game (the film star career with a Sim named Misty in this case), I load up the game, start to play & get about only a couple minutes into it & the tones go off. Med call. I'm out the door, go on the call, & when I finally get back, I sit down JUST start to continue my game, get a couple minutes into it, & Pete pulls in the driveway. Ever have one of those days when you just weren't meant to do something? We had a nice chicken dinner, watched some TV, & then I played Sims until who knows what hour. I do know I shorted my sleep by 2 hours because I didn't want to screw today up by sleeping too late. My film star did well. She's advancing nicely in her career, she met a fellow film star named Devin Ashton who has a penthouse (it's a very small one but still larger than her starter apartment), & they had a baby girl named Hazel Ashton. When I finally went to bed the girl had just aged up to toddler. 2nd generation coming along nicely. After spending yesterday with my new keyboard, I still love it. It's a little small compared to what I'm used to, but I'm getting used to it quickly. I love the bright illumination, the color, the feel of the keys ... the Borealis Firefly is a great keyboard if you're in the market & it's a great price too. I have normally paid a lot more for keyboards & was nervous at spending so little for a brand I've never heard of, but no regrets on this one. I woke up feeling under the weather today, so I hope the LCFD business meeting tonight goes quickly. As much as I enjoy the LCFD, I'm just not enjoying much of ANYTHING today & want to be home curled up under a blanket as much as possible until this thing passes. I love getting an email from eBay saying that I've won yarn. Isn't that a pretty color? I can't wait to incorporate it into my next project, or maybe even use it alone in its own little project ... it's the right color for a kitchen/dining room so I'm thinking maybe since it's cotton, a doily / hot pad / laptop pad for the counter that's between the dining room & kitchen. Yep, I like it. It's perfect!

Debt is a symptom if living without a plan.

Make sure your helmet fits. It should sit level on your head, 1 or 2 finger-widths above your eyebrows. The side straps should be just under your earlobes & the chin strap should be snug.

President Theodore Roosevelt was the 1st U.S. president to ride in an automobile in public.

Public places are noisy by nature, but don't add to the din by talking louder than you must. This includes a cell phone alert! Remember to keep your voice & the phone's ringer on low volume.

Suborn:
1: To induce secretly to do an unlawful thing. 2: To induce to commit perjury; also : to obtain (perjured testimony) from a witness.
In the 1st place, a jury couldn't easily be suborned by anyone.
The Latin work that gave us "suborn" in the early part of the 16th century is subornare, whose literal translation is "to secretly furnish or equip." The sub- that brings the "secretly" meaning to subornare more commonly means "under" or "below," & it stealthily appears in the etymologies of several other English words, including "surreptitious" (from sub- & rapere, meaning "to seize") & the verb "suspect" (from sub- or sus- & specere, meaning "to look at"). The ornare of subornare is also at work in the words "ornate," "adorn," & "ornament."

Treat yourself to a nice letter opener. Mail will be manageable & opened envelopes take up less space when neatly slit.

In writer-director Anthony Minghella's first feature film, Nina (Juliet Stevenson) is devastated by the death of her boyfriend, Jamie (Alan Rickman), who reappears to her as a ghost, almost as if he were conjured by her palpable grief. After a few blissful days, however, Jamie begins inviting his ghost friends over for political meetings and to watch movies at all hours of the night, reminding Nina of his annoying habits.
