• Myrtle Beach Day 5 2012 •

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Ours isn't until today when the rest of the family gets in. We're waiting for Angela, Logan, & Virginia. It's going to be great to see them again! Yesterday I enjoyed a large bowl of Rice Krispies for breakfast & then looked at the cool pics of snow at our house that Josh sent. Great pics! Lots of snow ... & I missed it. A white Christmas in Collin County & I'm in Myrtle Beach. Timing, huh? I checked eBay & Ann helped me pick up my old Panasonic boom box from my youth. I finally found one & it's in great condition! I'm so happy! Thank you Ann!! Mom cooked us a great chicken meal with corn, rice, & rolls for dinner (my lunch) & then I checked Twitter & loaded up Sims. I've never played Sims on a laptop before & I wanted to see how quickly I could crash this laptop by not only running Sims, but cranking all the settings up to full like I have on my gaming PC. Guess what? It runs great. This is one smokin' laptop! I want it. I wonder if maybe I could buy it (I'm only borrowing it at the moment). I didn't play last night, but instead started trying to recreate this house. It's coming along nicely & looks pretty close to the real thing. It's called Conway. No screenshots because I was too busy working on it to take a screenshot. I'll try to remember the next time I'm in there. :) This morning I checked my bank & all is well, so on with the rest of the day.

Chestnut lima, a.k.a Christmas lima, is a maroon-speckled bean that's actually unrelated to the lima bean. It has a subtle chestnut flavor.

Drop a handful of ice down your sink & run the garbage disposal. This cleans the blades. To ward off odor, sprinkle with baking soda or drop a piece of lemon down the sink too.

I'm not pleased that money is more concentrated among a fewer number of people. I don't think that's good. I think it would be great if everyone were winning. I don;t like income inequality, but I would never take it away from someone to give it to someone else to fix it - ever. Income redistribution doesn't work. The way to solve inequality is to teach the people who are not at the top how to get there. The economic pie just grows. There isn't a size limit, nor is there a limited number of pies.

Rarefied:
1: Of, relating to, or interesting to a select group : esoteric. 2: Very high.
Cartography is 1 of those rarefied fields at which only a select few can actually earn a living.
"Rarefied" was formed from the verb "rarefy," which derives from a combination of the Latin rarus ("thin" or "rare") with facere ("to make"). Since the 14th century, "rarefied" was also on the lean side, acquiring the sense of "made less dense" (as in "the fog lifted & we could breathe more easily in the rarefied air"). By the 16th century, "rarefy" had evolved to mean "to refine or purify." Over time "rarefied" followed suit; by the 1940s it was being used to mean "only for the select."

Set clear start & end times & stick to them. It's helpful to let the other parent know if you expect them to stay. Ask about food preferences & any health issues you should know about a child visiting your home. Have plenty of toys & activities on hand when you host a playdate for toddlers, but keep it casual & let the kids set the pace.

Tsunami devastates Indian Ocean coast (2004):
A powerful earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on this day in 2004 sets off a tsunami that wreaks death and devastation across the Indian Ocean coastline. The quake was the second strongest ever recorded and the estimated 230,000 dead made this disaster one of the 10 worst of all time.
It was 7:58 a.m. when the tremendous quake struck beneath the Indian Ocean 160 miles west of Sumatra. Not only did it register at approximately a 9.3 magnitude (only the 1960 Chile earthquake measured higher at 9.5, though there may have been stronger tremors prior to the invention of seismographic equipment) and last nearly 10 minutes, the quake moved a full 750 miles of underwater fault line earth up to 40 feet. The movement of the earth--there is evidence that huge boulders weighing thousands of tons were pushed several miles along the ocean floor--caused a massive displacement of water. It is estimated that the resulting tsunami had two times the energy of all the bombs used during World War II.
Within 15 minutes, tsunami waves were crashing the coast of Sumatra. At the north end of the island was a heavily populated region known as Aceh. There, waves reached 80 feet high over large stretches of the coast and up to 100 feet in some places. Entire communities were simply swept away by the water in a matter of minutes. The death toll in Indonesia is estimated at between 130,000 and 160,000 people, with an additional 500,000 people left homeless. About a third of the victims were children.
The huge waves missed the coast of Indonesia on the north side and went on to Thailand, where between 5,000 and 8,000 people died. The tsunami also moved east across the Indian Ocean. In Sri Lanka, the tsunami came ashore about 90 minutes after the earthquake. Although the waves were not as high as in Aceh, they still brought disaster. Approximately 35,000 people lost their lives and half a million others lost their homes. In addition, about 15,000 people died in India. The killer waves even reached 5,000 miles away in South Africa, where two people perished.
In total, about 190,000 people are confirmed dead with another 40,000 to 45,000 missing and presumed dead. Although billions of dollars of humanitarian aid poured in to the affected region in the aftermath of the disaster--an estimated $7 billion within the first 18 months—some areas are still suffering from the massive devastation.
One year prior to this earthquake and tsunami, almost to the hour, a 6.6-magnitude quake rocked Bam, Iran, killing 30,000 people.
