Christmas Eve Myrtle Beach Days 1-3 2012

Apparently I really needed a vacation. Now if I could just keep this laptop from flaking out on me. It keeps jumping around on me. One second I'm typing here, the next second I'm typing 4 lines up & to the right or some other completely random spot. I don't dare look away for a second. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the touch pad on this thing because I used to have the same problem with my other laptop. It's very uncomfortable typing when you can't rest your hands anywhere without getting too close to the touch pad. Other than that, I'm having a great time! Thursday I made sure the facebook app on my phone was working since I knew I'd be using it more than usual during the trip here. I cleaned the house, checked eBay, had a baked potato for lunch & then prepped for the trip by getting my truck ready. I took it out to get an oil change, inspection & registration. With the truck at 100%, all that was left was to pack ... that's for Friday though. I drove Josh up into Princeton & then played my last Sims game on my home computer for a while. I played my medical profession game. Friday morning I loaded up the Sims again, I had some time since Josh & Pete were both at work & Kyle was in school at least for half a day. When Kyle got home I packed for the trip & loaded everything into the truck. READY! The trip here was long, but I love driving so it was enjoyable. We got here & Eve jumped out the front door & knocked Pete backwards into me hugging him. Then she leaped over & hugged me, then grabbed both Pete & I together & hugged us ... meanwhile poor Kyle is standing behind us feeling like the fruitcake that no one really wants. LOL! Poor kid. She finally got to him too, but at 1st he felt a little left out. We were the 1st to arrive. Uncle Bill gets here any minute now, then Pete's sisters get here a day or so after Christmas with Logan (Pete's nephew). We all hung out & chatted a bit & then went to sleep ... we really needed it after all those hours on the road & even though we pulled over in a truck stop to sleep for a while, sleeping in a real bed is much different. For the last stretch of driving I tried 5 Hour Energy for the 1st time. That stuff tasted terrible, but was worth the almost $4 we paid for the tiny bottle. I was wide awake, alert, & sharp & there were no shakes or  crash. It works just as advertised & is amazing stuff. I have no idea what's in it, but it's worth it. When we woke up yesterday we felt much better. Fully rested. Pete & I have our own bedroom with a queen sized bed across the hall from Eve's bedroom. Kyle is sleeping on a temporary bed in the new living room that they recently added on since we were here last. This house is beautiful! Yesterday I checked facebook on the laptop & checked my e-mail on my phone. Boy, I should have cleared out the e-mail on that thing a long time ago. I had no idea how much was piled up on there. Now it's down to a normal level. I checked Twitter & then started all the downloads for the Sims. I've never played Sims before on a laptop. This is going to be new & fun! Once the downloads were started I got in the shower & got out just after Andrew & Erin got here. We sat & talked for a while & then we (Pete, Andrew, Erin, & I) all went out to dinner at Carolina Roadhouse. From there Andrew & Erin headed home & Pete & I went for a drive along the strip in Myrtle Beach. It's like a ghost town in the winter. I've only ever been here in the summer & WOW is it different. I'm used to seeing wall-to-wall people ... not closed hotels & completely barren streets. We found a place to park & walked over to the beach. It was so beautiful at night in the moonlight with NO people anywhere. We ran into a couple guys talking & hung out & chatted with them for a bit. It was a man & his son (who was 27 years old). The son has an accounting degree but doesn't like doing accounting, so instead has his own pool business. My 1st thought was of someone I used to know who worked FLASHBACKS! FREAKY!! When we said goodnight, we slowly drove back to the house, sightseeing & talking about living here ... housing costs, cost of living differences, & potential careers to be had here. I've changed over the years. I'd be happy anywhere. I can live here, I can live in Texas, I can live in Jersey ... I can live anywhere else. It doesn't matter anymore ... in a good way. I'd just be happy anywhere. BUT, here would be REALLY cool because we have a lot of people here we already know. A lot of family ... Pete's parents, my oldest son, my daughter, Pete's Uncle Bill is only a few hours north of here ... not to mention MYRTLE BEACH. Yeah, I could live here & love it! A lot of the food & brand names that I miss from Jersey are here. They weren't a Jersey thing, but an east coast thing. I'd move here just for the food even if there were no other factors to consider. We went to the grocery store yesterday morning & it was GREAT! All this stuff that I used to buy over 20 years ago was available again to me. I was so excited! This morning we woke up & it was just Pete, Kyle & myself here. Pete's parents & Eve went out to a doctor's appointment. Uncle Bill isn't here yet, but should be any minute. I'm taking this moment to blog, but not sure when I'll have the opportunity again. I'm going to TRY to blog daily, but with a house full of relatives, who knows how well that will or will not work out. It's vacation, it's unpredictable. We'll see. I updated my apps 1st thing this morning & only 1 couldn't update because I'm on 3G out here & this one app is huge & requires WiFi. Since I don't want to kill what Internet they DO have here, I'm going to wait until I get back home to update that monster.

1st game of "Basket Ball" was played at the YMCA in Springfield Massachusetts, during gym class taught by the inventor of basketball, Dr. James Naismith on this day in 1891. He adapted the game from a Canadian children's game called duck-on-a-rock.

After brushing your teeth be sure to wash down the drain any toothpaste globs. This will save you time cleaning. Teach your children to do the same.

Are Santa's reindeer girls? Antlers suggest they are. Both male & female reindeer have antlers. Made of bone, the antlers grow annually, but bucks lose their antlers in the fall. Only female reindeer keep their antlers through the winter months.

"Balloon Boy" parents sentenced in Colorado (2009):
On this day in 2009, Richard Heene, who carried out a hoax in which he told authorities his 6-year-old son Falcon had floated off in a runaway, saucer-shaped helium balloon, is sentenced to 90 days in jail in Fort Collins, Colorado. Heene’s wife Mayumi received 20 days of jail time for her role in the incident.
The so-called “Balloon Boy” saga riveted viewers around the globe two months earlier, on October 15, when it played out on live television. At around 11 a.m. that day, Richard Heene, a handyman, amateur scientist and father of three boys, called the Federal Aviation Administration to report that a large balloon in his family’s Fort Collins backyard had become untethered, and it was believed his son Falcon had crawled aboard the craft before it took flight. Minutes later, Heene phoned a local TV station, requesting a helicopter to track the balloon. A short time afterward, Mayumi Heene called 911.
The homemade silver craft was soon being tracked by search-and-rescue personnel, as well as reporters, on the ground and in the air. The Colorado National Guard launched two helicopters to follow the balloon, and a runway at Denver International Airport was briefly shut down as the balloon traveled into its flight path. At around 1:35 p.m., the craft touched down in a Colorado field after drifting a distance of some 50 miles from its starting location. Rescue officials soon discovered the balloon was empty, prompting fears that Falcon Heene had fallen from the craft during its flight. A massive ground search ensued, and later that afternoon it was announced the boy had been found safe at home, where he reportedly had been hiding.
Suspicions that the entire incident had been a hoax intensified that night, after Falcon Heene told his parents during a live interview on CNN: “You guys said we did this for the show.” Mayumi Heene later confessed to police the incident had been staged to help the family get a reality TV show. (The Heenes had previously appeared on the program “Wife Swap.”)
In November 2009, Richard Heene pleaded guilty to a felony charge of attempting to influence a public official ("to initiate a search-and-rescue mission which in turn would attract media attention," according to an affidavit filed by prosecutors), while Mayumi Heene pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of making a false report. Richard Heene later claimed he pleaded guilty only to placate authorities and prevent his wife from being deported to her native Japan. In addition to jail time, the Heenes were required to perform community service and Richard Heene was later ordered to pay $36,000 in restitution for the search effort.

Be careful of websites & services that promise you super deals every day. Sure, some of the deals are really great. But it can be like bidding on eBay. You may get sucked into it & start buying stuff that you don't need at volumes you don't want. Use restraint & avoid craziness.

He or she who does the inviting should pay the bill. This guideline applies to events with friends, dinner dates, business lunches & 1st dates. On the other hand, if someone organizes a get together with a friend - "Let's meet at the restaurant for lunch" - they're acting as a social organizer & not as host. This way, the friend who has been called knows to expect to pay for his meal.

Hyperborean:
Of or relating to an extreme northern region.
At this time of the year one's thoughts drift north to the vast cold places from which a hyperborean Santa will emerge tonight.
In ancient Greek mythology, the Hyperboreoi were a people who lived in a northern paradise of perpetual sunshine beyond the reaches of the god of the north wind. Their name combines the prefix hyper-, meaning "above," & Boreas, the Greek name for the north wind. When "hyperborean" 1st appeared in the English language in the 15th century, it was a noun naming those legendary folk. Later, the noun was extended to actual inhabitants of northern climates, & the adjective came to describe anything related to the far north or the people who live there.

I don't put money in any situation where I'm a minority shareholder in a privately held company, because you'll have absolutely no vote. You have no control over anything they do. They can decide to do stupid on steroids, & you have no say. I'm going to be in control of the deal, or I'm not going to be in the deal. And I don't put money in something where I'm just gambling.

If you choke on a bit of food, & a sip of water doesn't take care of the problem, cover your mouth & dislodge the morsel with a good cough. If you have to cough more than once or twice, excuse yourself & leave the table. Serious choking is another matter. If you're unable to cough, breathe or speak, do whatever's necessary - gesture, grab an arm - get fellow diners to help. Thankfully, many people, & most restaurant personnel, are trained to perform the life-saving Heimlich Maneuver.

If you delay your reply, you complicate the host's planning & make it seem as if you're waiting for something better to come along. Even if no RSVP as been requested, it's thoughtful to let your host know whether or not you plan to be there.

I'm getting old, & I've seen a whole lot of people predict the end of the world, & they ended before the world did. Everybody seems to think the world's coming to an end all the time, but I don't believe that. I'm not stockpiling bottled water. I'm not buying generators. I'm not buying gold. I don't think the dollar is going to go into hyperinflation. Instead, I bet on the future that that over a long period of time, investing in hardworking, innovative American companies is a reasonably good bet.

Lech Walesa sworn in as president of Poland (1990):
Lech Walesa, well-known Polish labor leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, is sworn in as the first noncommunist president of Poland since the end of World War II. His victory was another sign of the Soviet Union's lessening power and communism's waning influence in Eastern Europe.
Walesa first came into prominence in Poland in 1980 when he took over the leadership of a strike of shipyard workers. The action was a success, with Poland's communist government agreeing to the union's right to exist. This was the birth of the so-called "Solidarity" movement in Poland, a broad-based movement designed to remove communist control over labor organizations. Though forced to give in during the strike, the government plotted to eliminate this new threat to its power. Martial law was imposed in 1981 and shortly thereafter Walesa was arrested and put into solitary confinement for nearly a year. In 1983, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in organizing Polish labor and protesting communist oppression in his nation.
Upon his release from prison, Walesa resumed his union efforts. The Solidarity movement rapidly gained in strength and popularity. In 1989, the Polish government allowed semi-free elections and Solidarity candidates won seats in the national parliament. In 1990, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, the communist leader of Poland, agreed to step down and allow free elections. Walesa, though he initially shunned political office, ran for president as the Solidarity candidate and won. His election was another blow to Soviet power in East Europe and marked another defection from the communist Iron Curtain nations of Europe.
Walesa's five years in office were marked by Poland's rapid transformation to a growing free-market economy, though Walesa himself was often criticized for his leadership style, which included replacing government staffers almost yearly. He lost the presidential election in 1995 and ostensibly retired from public life. He ran for president again in 2000, but received less than one percent of the vote.

Occiput:
The back part of the head or skull.
So let me suggest that everyone ... stop trying to 'bury the hatchet' by planting it in the other fellow's occiput.
"Occiput" came to English from Latin, where it was created from ob-, meaning "against," & capit- or caput, meaning "head." Its adjectival form, "occipital," meaning "of, relating to, or located within or near the occiput or the occipital bone," abounds in medical texts but is found in literary ones, too. In Scenes of Clerical Life, George Eliot describes the coiffure of the "young ladies who frizzed their hair, & gathered it all into large barricades in front of their heads, leaving their occipital region exposed without ornament, as if that, being a back view, was of no consequence ..." Another caput derivation is "sinciput," a word used to refer to either the forehead or the upper half of the skull.

Russell Crowe stars in A Beautiful Mind (2001):
On this day in 2001, A Beautiful Mind, starring the actor Russell Crowe as John Forbes Nash, a Nobel Prize-winning economist and mathematician who develops schizophrenia, opens in limited release in the U.S. Directed by Ron Howard and co-starring Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and Paul Bettany, A Beautiful Mind opened in wide release on January 4, 2002, and went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations, including Crowe’s third consecutive nomination for Best Actor, and collect four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Connelly). A Beautiful Mind, a critical and box-office success, was based on a best-selling 1998 biography of the same name by Sylvia Nasar that explored Nash’s personal and professional life, including his work at Princeton University, MIT, the RAND (Research and Development) Corporation and his struggle with mental illness.
Crowe was born on April 7, 1964, in Wellington, New Zealand, and raised in Australia. He first received acclaim for his performances in various Australian movies in the early 1990s before gaining notice in Hollywood with 1995’s The Quick and the Dead, co-starring Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman. Crowe received accolades for his performance as a volatile police officer in 1997’s L.A. Confidential, with Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce and Kim Basinger, and earned his first Best Actor Oscar nomination for 1999’s The Insider, in which he played the real-life research scientist Jeffrey Wigand, who became a whistle-blower and reported on the tobacco’s industry’s unethical business practices. The Insider, which co-starred Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer, collected seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. With his performance as the Roman hero Maximus in 2000’s big-budget epic Gladiator, Crowe become a Hollywood A-lister. and won his first Best Actor Oscar. Directed by Ridley Scott and co-starring Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen and Richard Harris, Gladiator received 12 Academy Award nominations and won five Oscars, including Best Picture.
Crowe’s next film, the forgettable Proof of Life (2000), generated most of its headlines over the actor’s on-set affair with co-star Meg Ryan, who was married at the time to Dennis Quaid. Following the success of 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, Crowe starred in 2003’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. He went on to co-star with Renee Zellweger in 2005’s Cinderella Man, which reunited him with Gladiator director Ridley Scott. Among Crowe’s other recent credits are 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and American Gangster (2007), with Denzel Washington.
The talented Crowe is also known for his temper. In 2005, he was arrested and charged with second-degree assault after throwing a phone at a New York City hotel employee. Crowe later paid a fine to settle a civil lawsuit out of court.

Subway Shuffle:
Subway Shuffle represents a new concept in puzzling -- this is not a repackaging of puzzles you've seen elsewhere. Designed and developed by an MIT computer scientist, these puzzles pack a maximum of challenge and complexity into a deceptively simple layout.
Here's the setup: you are riding the subway, and your task is to reach your destination. The problem is, there are other subway cars in your way! Each subway car can move only on its own color line: the red cars on the Red Line, the blue cars on the Blue Line, etc. Can you shuffle the cars from station to station, eventually moving your own car to your exit station?
Subway Shuffle comes with 100 different layouts of increasing difficulty, each a self-contained puzzle in spatial reasoning and logic. The early levels are fairly easy; they help you learn the techniques you will need to solve the later levels. If you get stuck, a "hint" button will show you the next move.
Congratulations to puzzle guru Nick Baxter, who solved level 99! Of course, we had to design a new one, even harder. We thought 99 was beyond human capability, but we were wrong. How about level 100? We'll see...

Tremulous:
1: Marked by trembling or tremors : quivering. 2: Timorous or timid.
After crashing her car, Lucy hardly recognized her own tremulous voice telling the EMT that she was pretty sure she was okay.
Do you suspect that "tremulous" must be closely related to "tremble"? If so, you're right. Both of those words derive from the Latin verb tremere, which means "to tremble." Some other English offspring of tremere are "tremor," "tremendous," "temblor" (another word for earthquake), & "tremolo" (a term that describes a vibrating & quavering musical effect that was particularly popular for electric guitars & organs on the 1970s).

Woody Allen marries Soon-Yi Previn (1997):
On this day in 1997, Woody Allen, the 62-year-old Academy Award-winning writer-director of such movies as Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters, marries 27-year-old Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of his former girlfriend Mia Farrow, in a small ceremony in Venice, Italy. When news of the couple’s relationship was first publicly revealed in the media in 1992, it sparked a major scandal.
Woody Allen, who was born Allan Stewart Konigsberg on December 1, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, began his career as a comedy writer, stand-up comic and playwright. Allen followed his first feature screenplay, for 1965’s What’s New Pussycat?, with his directorial debut, What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, released the next year. He went on to helm such films as Take the Money and Run (1969) and Sleeper (1973), in which he co-starred with Diane Keaton, before co-writing and directing his first major hit, 1977’s Annie Hall. The film, which featured Allen as the neurotic comedian Alvy Singer and Keaton as his kooky love interest, won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress (Keaton).
Allen went on to earn Best Director and Best Screenplay Oscar nominations for 1978’s Interiors and a Best Original Screenplay nod for 1979’s Manhattan, in which he played a divorced comedy writer involved with a 17-year-old student (Mariel Hemingway). Some filmgoers later found parallels between the film and Allen’s relationship with Soon-Yi Previn.
During the 1980s, Allen’s films included Broadway Danny Rose (1984), which received Best Director and Best Screenplay Oscar nominations; The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), which also garnered a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination; Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), which won gold statues for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Michael Caine) and Best Actress (Dianne Wiest); and Crimes and Misdemeanors, which also earned Best Screenplay and Best Director Oscar nominations. In the 1990s, the prolific Allen collected Best Screenplay Oscar nominations for Alice (1990), Husbands and Wives (1992), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Mighty Aphrodite (1995) and Deconstructing Harry (1997). Among Allen’s more recent films are 2005’s Match Point, which stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and also received a Best Screenplay Academy Award nomination, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).
Off screen, Allen has been romantically linked to a series of actresses who have appeared in his films, including Louise Lasser, to whom he was married in the late 1960s, and Diane Keaton. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Allen was involved with Mia Farrow, with whom he adopted two children and had one biological child. Before her involvement with Allen, Farrow--whose movie credits include Rosemary’s Baby, The Great Gatsby and Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters--was married to Frank Sinatra (1966-1968) and the conductor Andre Previn (1970-1979), with whom she had three biological children and three adopted children, including Soon-Yi Previn. Farrow and Allen’s relationship broke up after she discovered his involvement with Previn. The actress and director then became involved in a highly publicized child-custody battle during which Farrow accused Allen of abusing their young daughter. Allen was later cleared of the charges; he and Soon-Yi Previn have two daughters together.
