★ December 17, 2012 ★

It's been a few days. How is everyone out there? Let's see, I was last on here Thursday. Since then I did housework ... dusted the living room blinds & kitchen lights, folded laundry, dusted the video game system & knitting machine, & cleaned out my truck. I checked eBay, cleaned out the Notes on my iPhone & added a new one, & then started a new afghan on the knitting machine. This one is going to take MUCH longer because it has
fancy stitches. No more speeding through a panel ... every single row takes time & effort. It's beautiful, but that means no more Sims for a very long time. At least not as often because I always work on the knitting machine 1st & each panel takes several days to complete even if I spend all of my free time working on it. Until this afghan is completed, I only get to play Sims on my days off, which are very few in the foreseeable future. Friday is my only day
off this week & also the day we're leaving for Myrtle Beach, so I'll probably spend most of that time packing & making sure I have everything. I made a packing list ... is somewhere around here. LOL! I hope! I gave up Thursday on getting any help around here from the kids. After rewriting the entire cleaning schedule, I erased it all. They wouldn't do anything. Even written out as if they were 5 ... instead of "Living Room" it read "Living room - pick up all plates & glasses & put them in the sink, straighten the afghan on the chair, pick up anything that fell off the coffee table." So what to they do? Straighten the afghan & check it off as done. There are still plates & glasses on the coffee table from the night before. There were half a dozen examples exactly like that one, so I gave up. I just figured NO ONE will get anything more than the bare minimum since that's all they give. Food & shelter. That's IT. Internet, television, gaming systems ... none of that is an entitlement. You get what you give & since they give zero, they get zero over the bare minimum. No more arguments, no more expectations. I'm done. I made cheeseburgers for dinner for Pete & I, we watched TV & headed to bed. Friday was my day off. I played Sims. I relaxed. It was great! Saturday I spent the entire day out. Woke up, left the house, came home that night & went to bed. Saturday was errands, shopping, driving Josh to & from work, & the ONE day a YEAR I get my hair done. All I had done was to get the top shortened & the split ends trimmed off. I let it dry naturally, so it's super curly now. I look like Annie again minus the red hair. Paul noticed immediately & was the only one to say something. He's pretty sharp! It was also the LCFD Christmas party. Paul Wood is firefighter of the year. 2nd time for him. He was firefighter of the year when I got there, then I got it 2 years in a row, then this year I gave it back to him. Since our wall plaque is full, I think they can condense Paul & I. Paul, instead of having 2 plates, can have one that read 2009 & 2012. Instead of me having 2 plates, mine can be condensed to read 2010 & 2011. Paul & I are the only 2 LCFD members to ever get firefighter of the year TWICE. Our gifts this year was a folding knife. Nice & heavy, good quality, & it has our patch graphic on it. It actually say Lowry Crossing Fire Department. Sweet! Thank you Aaron! In the gift exchange, I had originally gotten a wax tart warmer. Aaron's girlfriend got a set of 5 candles. I love candles! Since I didn't have an opportunity to "steal" her gift, when it was all over I walked up & said I'd gladly swap gifts with her. :) She likes candles, too & so does Aaron. However, at the end of the evening as everyone was packing up to leave, she came up to me & said she's swap gifts with me. SWEEET! I owe her. I need to find out when her birthday is & buy her a nice set of candles. :) Sunday I went through the paper, did the facebook thing, cleared out my e-mail, showered, got fuel in my truck & saw someone I used to be friends with long ago. I didn't think they saw me, but they did. They even waved ... with ALL their fingers. I was happily surprised. I waved back, but I'm not sure if they saw me wave back because I had just gotten back in my truck & started it. The window was closed & I have dark tinted side windows. She may have seen me wave back, but maybe not. I hope she did. I'd hate to think she waved & thought I intentionally didn't wave back. I had seen her a few days earlier at that same intersection. I was sitting at the light & she made a left in front of me. I don't think she saw me that day though. I had lunch at DQ with Pete, picked Josh up from work, & didn't make it back in time to make the EMS call that we got toned out to. I finished the 1st panel of the new afghan on the knitting machine, the FD got toned out to another EMS call 1 street over from the previous one, I checked Twitter, Josh & I split a large box pizza deal for dinner (2 pan pizzas, alfredo, cheesy bread, & a 2-liter bottle of soda) for everyone for dinner, Pete & I watched Fringe & headed off to bed. Josh & Kyle finally stepped up to the plate with a lot of prodding from Pete. I'm glad that they're finally helping out around the house, but I'm not happy that it's only Pete who can get them to do things around here. Is it because I'm female? Is that why neither of the boys have any respect for me? Whatever the reason, they're not going to get on my good side until things change around here. This is my house, not theirs. That makes me their boss whether they like it or not & running the household THROUGH Pete isn't acceptable. They took a step in the right direction the past couple days ... now they just need to come the rest of the way. They're not out of the woods YET. That brings us to today (Monday). Josh is off today, but had some side work to do so Pete dropped him off on his way to work. That left me with a surprise day off. I loaded up Sims & completed a bathroom in Sapphire Point & then loaded up Chestnut Hill (one of the houses I built). Chestnut Hill is in Cornucopia. I started out with Frank. An equestrian couch potato who is unlucky, ambitious, & a mooch. His lifetime wish is to be swimming in cash. He likes tri-tip steak, indie music, & the color white. He's a Taurus. He got a job in the business field & has made it all the way to Power Broker! He now travels around town in style in a limo. His furry companion was a Clydesdale named Harry who was brave, agile, & ornery. Harry has been put up for adoption though because the lot didn't have enough space to have a horse. The poor thing had no room to run around or even have any accessories that make horses happy. Frank married Rocio. She's a firefighter & has made Chief. It was all I could do to make room on the lot for the fire engine she received upon making Chief. Frank & Rocio had twins. Liz & Lewis (2nd gen). Liz is an eccentric who is excitable, artistic, lucky, & an angler. Her lifetime wish is to be a visionary (master photography & painting skills). She's a Gemini who likes french music, key lime pie, & the color Irish green. Her twin brother Lewis is grumpy, absent-minded, an angler, coward, & handy. His lifetime wish is presenting the perfect private aquarium. He's a Capricorn who likes roots music, frogs legs, & the color black. Liz married Jimmy Gagnon & they're expecting a child. Lewis married Billie Newsome & they're still trying to get pregnant. The 1st attempt failed, but it was a long day & they're both exhausted. With the introduction of Seasons, I decided to start with Spring in this game. It's a cool 51° at 9:a. After an all too short 2 hours in Sims, Josh came home from his side job. No more Sims now until Friday. I updated the apps on my phone & that's it so far today. It's early, so I expect a lot of productivity today. LCFD business meeting & annual vote for Chief & Assistant Chief tomorrow.

Be sympathetic when a co-worker is fired or is the victim of downsizing, but don't prolong the agony by talking it into toe ground. Be a good listener. Accept your coworker's official explanation for the firing, & don't engage in speculation with him or anyone else about the cause. Avoid gossip & negative bashing of the boss or organization. If you can give practical assistance, do so - a recommendation, help with a resume update, job leads.

Cognate:
1: Of the same or similar nature. 2: Related; especially : related by descent from the same ancestral language.
While conversing with Sarah, Jim discovered that his doctoral work was cognate with her current research.
The story of "cognate" is all relative, that is, it's all about relatives. Cognate words share an ancestor, like "allude" & "prelude" (which both trace to the Latin root ludere) & the English "brother" & the German Bruder (which are both related to the Greek phrater). Cognate languages, like French, Spanish, & Italian, descend from the same ancestral language. People related through a common ancestor are cognate, & groups of people, such as tribes, can be cognate to one another. "Cognate" also describes things related in a more figurative way, as in "cognate developments," "cognate disciplines," or "cognate problems." "Cognate" itself comes from latin cognatus, which traces to Latin nasci, meaning "to be born." Some words cognate to "cognate" include "innate," "nascent," "native," & "Renaissance."

Dave Ramsey tells people not to buy prepaid legal services. Prepaid legal costs about $300 a year. That's about $3,000 over 10 years. The average American consumer doesn't spend $3,000 in a 10 year period of time on legal bills. Instead, he recommends you self-insure your need for an attorney using a good emergency fund. Then, should the need arise to hire legal services, you'll be able to pay for it.

Etiquette is a code of behavior for people from all walks of life, every socioeconomic group & of all ages.

Hidden Jobs:
Don't job hunt, company hunt. Discover new job leads from companies just before they begin to hire. Hidden Jobs App is a database of news articles about companies who are expanding their operations. It lists these articles in a simple state by state dropdown menu so you can find hidden jobs near you.
The app will also automatically Google open jobs at that company as well as offering push alerts to your iOS device. Get notified as soon as any company in your state has announced a new hiring initiative.
For US residents only. The database is updated daily with new hidden job sources. NOTE: this app does NOT list jobs. Think of it as 'radar for new jobs'.

If you have a strand of garland or lights that fit well in a certain place in your house (i.e. around a door frame or banister) label the strand so you know where to put it next year.

If you plan to ship cookies this holiday season, send firm, thick cookies! Cookies will survive the postal system much better if they're in a firm container, not a plastic bag. Between each layer of cookies put a layer of wax paper so the cookies don't stick together in transit. Fill in the empty space between cookies & at the edges of the container with crumbled wax paper or plastic wrap. This prevents the cookies from shifting or breaking. Put this container along with any other contents of the package into a box. Pad the box generously with crumbled newspaper or packing materials. Your cookies should arrive safely!

If your home is large enough where your children get a playroom, create zones to encourage different types of play. Give your children a work zone to color, draw, or write. Have wall space set aside to display their art pieces (this keeps the refrigerator door clear too).

Keep a stress diary. After a week, scan it for patterns & brainstorm ways to deal with issues. For example, if you're anxious during your commute, download an audiobook to make the trip more relaxing.

Kim Jong Il, Leader of North Korea, Dies (2011):
On this day in 2011, Kim Jong Il, North Korea's enigmatic, reclusive dictator, dies of a heart attack while reportedly traveling on a train in his country. Kim, who assumed leadership of North Korea upon the death of his father in 1994, ruled the Communist nation with an iron fist, and his isolated, repressive regime was accused of numerous human rights violations.
Little is known about Kim’s early life, although it is believed he was born in 1941 at a Soviet military base near Khabarovsk, Russia, where his father was stationed. However, when Kim became leader of North Korea, the government propaganda machine, which presented numerous myths about him as fact, claimed he was born on February 16, 1942, atop Korea's sacred Mount Paektu, as a new star and double rainbow appeared overhead.  (Among the many other questionable claims reported by the state media about the man known as the "Dear Leader" and "Supreme Leader" to his followers was that he made 11 holes-in-one in a single round of golf, composed numerous operas, invented an invisible cell phone and could control the weather.)
In 1948, Kim's father, Kim Il Sung (1912-1994), became head of the newly established Communist nation of North Korea (officially named the Democratic People's Republic of Korea). The younger Kim graduated from the country's Kim Il Sung University in 1964, and went on to rise through the Korean Workers' Party, the ruling political party, while also developing a reputation as a playboy who enjoyed fine food and expensive liquor. Additionally, Kim, a film fanatic, amassed a vast collection of foreign movies, and in 1978 ordered the kidnapping of a famous South Korean actress and her director husband in order to boost North Korea's movie industry.
Soon after Kim succeeded his father, North Korea experienced a series of severe famines that killed an estimated 2 million people by the late 1990s. As ordinary citizens suffered economic hardships, Kim directed a substantial portion of the nation's budget to maintaining a large military and to the development of nuclear weapons (which North Korea tested in 2006 and 2009). Additionally, under Kim's totalitarian regime, the media was controlled by the state, and average North Koreans had minimal personal liberties and couldn't leave the country (the few foreigners who were allowed in were closely monitored). Those who opposed the government were sent to harsh prison camps. As with his father (now referred to by North Koreans as the "eternal president"), a cult of personality built up around Kim. The two men were portrayed as deities and images of them appeared on all public buildings.
The relationship between North Korea and the United States, along with much of the West, was strained due to Kim's secretive nuclear weapons program. In 2002, President George Bush called out North Korea as part of an "axis of evil," along with Iran and Iraq. However, in 2008, the Bush administration took North Korea off the U.S. list of terrorism-supporting nations after it agreed to allow some inspections of its nuclear sites.
After Kim died on December 17, 2011, his embalmed body was put on permanent public display in Kumsusan Memorial Palace in the nation’s capital, Pyongyang. (The body of Kim Il Sung has been on display there since he died.) Kim was succeeded as leader of North Korea by the youngest of his three sons, Kim Jong Un, then in his 20s and largely unknown to the world.

King Kong remake debuts (2005):
On this day in 2005, King Kong, a remake of the classic 1933 film of the same name about a fictional giant ape who climbs New York City’s Empire State Building, opens in theaters.
The original King Kong, starring Fay Wray as the great ape’s love interest, as well as Robert Armstrong and Bruce Cabot, turned the larger-than-life gorilla into one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons. The 1933 film, which contains the now-famous line, “It was beauty killed the beast,” earned particular notice for its pioneering special effects. The film spawned a series of sequels, including Son of King Kong (1933), King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), King Kong Escapes (1967) and King Kong Lives (1987).
Born on September 15, 1907, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, the actress Fay Wray appeared in some 90 movies during her career, but was best known for her role as Ann Darrow, an out-of-work actress who travels to Skull Island, where King Kong falls in love with her. When the giant ape is later captured and taken to New York City, he snatches Wray and climbs up the Empire State Building. Wray was reportedly asked to make a cameo in 2005’s King Kong; before that could happen, however, she died at the age of 96 on August 8, 2004.
In 1976, the producer Dino DeLaurentis released an updated, Oscar-nominated version of King Kong, featuring Jessica Lange, Jeff Bridges and Charles Grodin. Lange, born on April 20, 1949, in Cloquet, Minnesota, made her big-screen debut as Dwan, an updated version of Ann Darrow, and was panned for her performance by some critics. Lange shook off the criticism and went on to appear in such well-received films as 1979’s All That Jazz and 1981’s The Postman Always Rings Twice with Jack Nicholson; she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for 1982’s Frances. Lange won another Oscar for her supporting role in 1983’s Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman. More Best Actress nominations followed, for 1984’s Country, 1985’s Sweet Dreams and 1989’s Music Box. She took home her first Best Actress Oscar for 1994’s Blue Sky, co-starring Tommy Lee Jones.
Directed by Peter Jackson (the filmmaker behind the multiple Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy), the 2005 King Kong remake starred Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody and Jack Black. The film was a box-office success and won three Academy Awards, for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. Watts, who played Ann Darrow, was born September 28, 1968, in Shoreham, England, and raised in Australia. She gained notice in Hollywood with David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (2001) and the 2002 hit horror film The Ring. Among Watts’ other credits are 21 Grams (2003), with Sean Penn, for which she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination; The Painted Veil (2006), with Edward Norton; and Eastern Promises (2007), with Viggo Mortensen.

"Larry King Live" ends after 25 years on CNN (2010):
On this day in 2010, Larry King, the iconic, suspenders-sporting host of TV talk show “Larry King Live,” signs off after 25 years on the air. The 77-year-old King had hosted the hour-long CNN program, featuring interviews with movies stars, world leaders, politicians, musicians and other newsmakers, since June 1985. The farewell broadcast of “Larry King Live” included appearances by Ryan Seacrest, Regis Philbin, Katie Couric, Donald Trump, former president Bill Clinton (via satellite) and President Barack Obama (in a pre-recorded video), among others. Toward the end of the program, Tony Bennett serenaded King, who had become a TV institution, along with his wife and two young sons.
Larry King, who was born Lawrence Zeiger in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, began his career as a disc jockey and sports announcer for a radio station in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1957. During the 1960s and 1970s, he worked in Miami as a radio and TV host and newspaper columnist before getting his own nationally syndicated radio program in 1978. In June 1985, King joined CNN, the cable news channel founded by Ted Turner in 1980. “Larry King Live,” which anchored CNN’s prime-time lineup, originated from Washington, D.C., before moving to Los Angeles in the 1990s.
The first guest on “Larry King Live” was Mario Cuomo, the governor of New York. The program went on to receive big ratings boosts when billionaire Ross Perot appeared as a guest in 1992 and announced his intention to run as an independent candidate for the U.S. presidency, and in 1993 when Vice President Al Gore and Perot came on to debate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). That edition of “Larry King Live” was the highest-rated in cable history for more than a decade.
Over the course of 25 years, King, who became known for his straightforward, nonconfrontational interview style, consistently landed big-name guests, ranging from Marlon Brando (who famously kissed King on the lips) to Vladimir Putin to Lady Gaga. From a set featuring a color-dotted map of the world on a dark background, King often took call-in, and later email, viewer questions for his interview subjects. He has said that in order to be fresh and learn from his guests, he didn’t prepare extensively for interviews. This approach could occasionally backfire and make King seem out of touch, as in 2007, when he asked Jerry Seinfeld if his sitcom had been cancelled or if he had left voluntarily. A surprised Seinfeld, who had famously exited his show of his own accord, said to King, “Do you know who I am?”
In June 2009, King announced plans to end his show. At the time, “Larry King Live” had fallen into third place in the ratings behind political programs hosted by Sean Hannity of Fox News and Rachel Maddow of MSNBC. By the time “Larry King Live” went off the air in December 2010, the legendary host had conducted some 50,000 interviews, by his account, during his more than 50-year career in radio and television.

Leaning Tower of Pisa reopens (2001):
On this day in 2001, Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa reopens after a team of experts spent 11 years and $27 million to fortify the tower without eliminating its famous lean.
In the 12th century, construction began on the bell tower for the cathedral of Pisa, a busy trade center on the Arno River in western Italy, some 50 miles from Florence. While construction was still in progress, the tower's foundation began to sink into the soft, marshy ground, causing it to lean to one side. Its builders tried to compensate for the lean by making the top stories slightly taller on one side, but the extra masonry required only made the tower sink further. By the time it was completed in 1360, modern-day engineers say it was a miracle it didn't fall down completely.
Though the cathedral itself and the adjoining baptistery also leaned slightly, it was the Torre Pendente di Pisa, or Leaning Tower of Pisa, that became the city's most famous tourist attraction. By the 20th century, the 190-foot-high white marble tower leaned a dramatic 15 feet off the perpendicular. In the year before its closing in 1990, 1 million people visited the old tower, climbing its 293 weathered steps to the top and gazing out over the green Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) outside. Fearing it was about to collapse, officials appointed a group of 14 archeologists, architects and soil experts to figure out how to take some--but not all--of the famous tilt away.
Though an initial attempt in 1994 almost toppled the tower, engineers were eventually able to reduce the lean by between 16 and 17 inches by removing earth from underneath the foundations. When the tower reopened on December 15, 2001, engineers predicted it would take 300 years to return to its 1990 position. Though entrance to the tower is now limited to guided tours, hordes of tourists can still be found outside, striking the classic pose--standing next to the tower pretending to hold it up--as cameras flash.

Paying extra on a debt? Fill out a separate check & write PRINCIPAL ONLY in big letters on the notation line. Some payment books have a place where you can enter that principal amount as an extra amount. You can also write out a separate amount on a separate check in a separate envelope. No matter how you do it, make sure your money doesn't go toward prepayments.

Refurbish:
To brighten or freshen up : renovate.
Bill & Marie bought the historic brownstone with the intent of refurbishing it.
Wondering if today's word implies the existence of an earlier "furbish"? If so, you're on the right track. "Furbish" was borrowed into English in the 14th century from Anglo-French furbiss-, a distant relative of an Old high German word meaning "to polish." In its earliest uses "furbish" also meant "to polish," but it developed an extended sense of "renovate" shortly before English-speakers coined "refurbish" in the 17th century. These days "refurbish" is the more common of the 2 words.

Shank's mare:
One's own legs.
We were determined to see the ruins, & when we found out the shuttle bus wasn't running that day, our only alternative was to put on our walking shoes & travel by shank's mare.
"A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!" Many travelers in centuries past would have agreed with King Richard's famous lines from Shakespeare's Richard III - when you needed to travel any distance in the days before automobiles, you definitely wanted a horse. When one wasn't available, you had to rely on your built-in transportation equipment, your feet & legs. The word "shank" has been used to mean "the lower leg" since before the 12th century, & "shank's mare" 1st appeared in writing in the late 1700s. Another vivid expression connecting people & horses was "horse with 10 toes," but that is now relegated to history.

There are 3 reasons why you should pay off your home. 1st, paying off the house lowers risk, because you won't be foreclosed on if your house is paid off. It gives you great security. 2nd, people say you an make money by borrowing money at a low interest rate on your house & investing in the stock market. But by the time you adjust for risk & taxes, you don't come out ahead. I would never borrow on my home to invest. Keep your keys to yourself. & 3rd, you'll save money.

To "toe the line" means to what?
A. Bend the rules
B. Follow the rules
