July 9, 2012

Happy Monday! What a wonderful day yesterday! We got SO much done in the back yard ... it was just amazing. The view is incredible now. No more dead branches or leaves, no overgrown hedge, it's all been neatened up, cut back, trimmed, etc. Now I have a straight shot view of my Crepe Myrtles, the breeze is improved, I added a stereo ... so now I have a place to hang out with the family in the evening & alone during the daytime with a great view, tunes, a mini-fridge, & my glider swing, all under a covered porch with a ceiling fan & good lighting, overlooking our beautiful back yard. I mean ... WOW! Life isn't just good, it's GREAT! I better do something amazing soon! LCFD Maintenance Tuesday.

Diurnal:
1: Recurring every day. 2a: Of, relating to, or occurring in the daytime. b: Active chiefly during the daytime.
Unlike birds & diurnal mammals, bats are awake when most reserchers & nature lovers are asleep.
Can you guess which of the following words have the same Latin root as our word du jour, "diurnal"?
a. journey b. dial c. quotidian d. dairy e. meridian f. journal g. circadian h. daily
The answer: all of them except "daily" (it's from Old English, not Latin). "Diurnal" & all of the other terms in this little quiz (& "du jour," too) come ultimately from dies, the Latin word for "day."

Egg cartons or ice cube trays are great for storing jewelry & other small items (i.e. a child's hair accessories, paper clips, thumb tacks, etc.). They even stack if you want to store them in a drawer to keep them out of sight.

Fitness center etiquette:
  • Be odor-aware: Arrive clean, remember to apply deodorant, & lay off the perfume & cologne.
  • Be punctual for personal training sessions & group fitness classes.
Highwaymen:
Wheelchair-bound serial killer Fargo (Colm Feore), whose tricked-out green Cadillac serves as his deadly weapon, rages loose on the highway, and the only man who can stop his rampage is Rennie (James Caviezel), the husband of a woman he's murdered. When Rennie teams up with a survivor of one of Fargo's rampages (Rhona Mitra), the pair vows to stop him before he flattens anyone else. Frankie Faison co-stars in this deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

How many book projects does prolific romance novelist Danielle Steel generally work on at a time?
5. Steel says that while she’s writing a new book, she’s editing 2 that she’s already written, outlining another, & researching yet another.

I'd advise anyone to make sure that their job falls in line with their passions & the skills & talents whey were born with. If you're a people person, you don't want a job where you never get to deal with people. If you hate talking on the phone, you probably don't need to explore the field of telemarketing. Success in your career is important. But your personal happiness is just as important. If you wake up jazzed about what you're about to do that day, chances are you'll be successful - & happy.

In what grueling annual race is the last person to cross the finish line presented with the Red Lantern Award?
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, held in Alaska. The first time it was handed out, the Red Lantern Award was a joke, but it has since come to symbolize perseverance.

"I was walking along the beach," said Sid Shady, "watching my kite soar over the ocean when I came upon this body washed up on shore. I immediately phoned the police." Shadow noted the nearby tracks of a seagull which lead out toward the ocean. "The gull must have run across the sand in a take off within the last 20 minutes or else the receding high tide would have washed its prints away," said Shadow. When Shadow inquired about the whereabouts of the kite, Shady said that in his excitement he must have let it go. "It's probably over the ocean somewhere." "It's perfectly calm now," noted Shadow. "Yes, the wind suddenly died moments before you arrived," replied Shady. "I don't know what you're mixed up in," said Shadow, "but your story has a gaping hole." What is it?

Liberty Bell tolls to announce Declaration of Independence (1776):
On this day in 1776, a 2,000-pound copper-and-tin bell now known as the “Liberty Bell” rings out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Four days earlier, the historic document had been adopted by delegates to the Continental Congress, but the bell did not ring to announce the issuing of the document until the Declaration of Independence returned from the printer on July 8.
In 1751, to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Pennsylvania's original constitution, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly ordered the bell to be constructed. After being cracked during a test, and then recast twice, the bell was hung from the State House steeple in June 1753. Rung to call the Pennsylvania Assembly together and to summon people for special announcements and events, it was also rung on important occasions, such as King George III’s 1761 ascension to the British throne and, in 1765, to call the people together to discuss Parliament's controversial Stamp Act. With the outbreak of the American Revolution in April 1775, the bell was rung to announce the battles of Lexington and Concord. Its most famous tolling, however, was on July 8, 1776, when it summoned Philadelphia citizens for the first reading of the Declaration of Independence.
As the British advanced toward Philadelphia in the fall of 1777, the bell was removed from the city and hidden in Allentown to save it from being melted down by the British and used to make cannons. After the British defeat in 1781, the bell was returned to Philadelphia, which served as the nation's capital from 1790 to 1800. In addition to marking important events, the bell tolled annually to celebrate George Washington's birthday on February 22 and Independence Day on July 4. The name "Liberty Bell" was first coined in an 1839 poem in an abolitionist pamphlet.
The question of when the Liberty Bell acquired its famous fracture has been the subject of a good deal of historical debate. In the most commonly accepted account, the bell suffered a major break while tolling for the funeral of the chief justice of the United States, John Marshall, in 1835, and in 1846 the crack expanded to its present size while in use to mark Washington's birthday. After that date, it was regarded as unsuitable for ringing, but it was still ceremoniously tapped on occasion to commemorate important events. On June 6, 1944, when Allied forces invaded France, the sound of the bell's dulled ring was broadcast by radio across the United States.
In 1976, the Liberty Bell was moved to a new pavilion about 100 yards from Independence Hall in preparation for America's bicentennial celebrations. It remains there today and is visited by more than 1 million people each year.

MTV’s The Real World leaves Hollywood (2008):
On this day in 2008, the final episode of The Real World: Hollywood, a reality television show about seven young adults selected to live together, airs on MTV. Real World: Hollywood marked the 20th season of the pioneering reality program, which debuted in 1992 and went on to become MTV’s longest-running show.
MTV (Music Television) was launched on August 1, 1981, as a channel dedicated to music videos, but by the late 1980s the network had started airing some non-video programming. The Real World, created by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, premiered in May 1992 with the first season set in New York City. Since that time, subsequent seasons have been filmed in cities around the world, including Boston, Miami, Paris and Sydney. Each season has followed the same basic format: A cast of seven men and women between the ages of 18 and 25 are selected from auditions to have their lives captured on camera while they live together for several months. The housemates are from diverse backgrounds and frequently clash over issues of race, sexuality, politics, love and dirty dishes. Each show opens with cast members reciting the words: “This is the true story... of seven strangers...picked to live in a house...work together and have their lives taped... to find out what happens when people stop being polite...and start getting real.”
Throughout the series, Real World housemates have battled a variety of personal issues, including alcoholism and eating disorders. One of the show’s most notable seasons was the third, Real World: San Francisco, which featured an obnoxious bike messenger named Puck, who frequently clashed with housemate Pedro Zamora, an HIV-positive AIDS educator. At the time, Zamora was one of the first openly gay young people with AIDS to be featured on a mainstream TV program. Zamora died in November 1994, shortly after the show’s season finale aired. He was commended for his activism by then-President Bill Clinton.
After appearing on The Real World, which spawned the spin-off programs Road Rules and Real World/Road Rules Challenge, some cast members have used the show as a springboard to careers in acting, modeling and public speaking.
