✦ June 6, 2012 ✦

Super busy day yesterday, but I did make time to watch a great movie that I rated 5 stars called Always. That's the most I've cried during a movie in a long time. OK, time for my opinion piece ... IN MY OPINION: Why is it always the most insignificant people who are so arrogant that they think the world revolves around them? I've heard of compensating, but really? A totally insignificant nothing of a person really looks ridiculous puffing up & pretending they're important. What's even worse is them standing there all puffed up claiming to be in charge of anything ... ever. Really? You REALLY thought YOU were in charge? Ummm ... no. There were 3 other people there who were WAY above you & you weren't even prepared (yes, I'm speaking of a specific incident & person, don't worry about it). The point is, it's always the person who means the least, the person with absolutely no say in anything, the person in the room who everyone outranks in some way, that thinks they're in charge & probably goes home & tells their family that THEY were in charge of everything & how THEY saved the day & how THEY stomped on all the little people. Guess what, you're NOT in charge & you're NOT a leader because you STINK at it. Your people skills END the second you think you have any authority over anyone ... you threaten people repeatedly & you're extremely condescending. You have no idea what humility or humbleness is. I knew someone else like that, too ... they were fired. I'm tired of the constant bragging, I'm tired of the constant chest-puffing, I'm tired of the constant belittling of everyone you get near, I'm tired of YOU. Get a grip, get a life, & realize why you still are nothing. Attitude. Your attitude SUCKS. You whine, you bitch, you moan, you think you're in charge but make SO many mistakes that if you truly WERE in charge we'd all be screwed. Get your ego in check, shut up, back down, & let the people who REALLY know what they're doing actually get some work done. You over-step your authority all the time, & you're a terrible little person from everything I've ever seen of you. You have less friends than you THINK you do. Trust me on that one. People are just being polite, something you wouldn't know anything about since I've never SEEN you be polite ... but then again how could you be polite with all that arrogance? You're just a wanna-be. You wanna-be in charge. You wanna-be important. You wanna-be rich. You want you want you want. You should be frog-marched out the nearest door.

Always: Directed by Steven Spielberg, this affecting remake of A Guy Named Joe stars Richard Dreyfuss as brash Pete Sandich, a firefighting pilot who dies in the line of duty but returns as a guardian angel to fledgling aviator Ted Baker (Brad Johnson). Pete's task takes an unexpected twist, however, when Ted begins falling for Dorinda Durston (Holly Hunter) -- the girl Pete left behind. Audrey Hepburn plays a seraph in her final big-screen appearance.

Conversationalist tips:
  • Be a generalist & keep up on current events.
  • Ask for people's opinions.
  • Use caution when discussing controversial topics, or avoid them entirely.
  • Practice! Chat casually with people you see throughout the day - store personnel, taxi drivers, acquaintances.
  • Listen! Listen actively by looking at & concentrating on the other person & what's being said.
Frog-march:
To seize from behind roughly & forcefully propel forward.
When the patron became loud & belligerent, a hulking bouncer swiftly pinned him in a half nelson & frog-marched him out the door.
There are a couple of variations of the frog's march" used to carry away an unruly person. The 1st involves carrying the person face downward by the arms & legs; when this is done by 4 people each holding a limb, the person's body resembles a stretched-out frog. In another version the person is carried off by his collar & the seat of his pants, again giving the image of a frog but this time with limbs uselessly flailing about. These methods of moving a person give us the verb "frog-march" in the late 19th century. The verb was also extended to cover more general, less frog-like, methods of removal, such as forcing an intractable individual forward with arms held in back or at the sides.

It's a good idea to use water produced by your dehumidifier on your houseplants. True or false?
Hard to say! It sounds like a great idea, & some indoor gardeners use this water with seemingly no problem. But the general Electric Company, one of the several manufacturers of dehumidifiers, doesn't advise reusing the water from these machines for anything.
If you don't use one of the solvents sold for cleaning dehumidifiers - these may contain chemicals harmful to plants - you might do a bit of experimenting yourself: use the water collected by your humidifier on 1 inexpensive plant for several weeks & see what happens.
And just to be on the safe side, don't use the water on anything you plan to eat.

Just moving from the couch to the refrigerator several times a day uses up calories.

Sex and the City premieres on HBO (1998):
On this day in 1998, the cable network HBO airs the pilot episode of Sex and the City, a new comedy series chronicling the lives and loves of four single women living in New York City.
The show’s creator, Darren Star, was best known at the time for producing the long-running Fox TV series Beverly Hills, 90210, and its spin-off, Melrose Place. For Sex and the City, Star switched coasts, loosely adapting a book by the same name by Candace Bushnell, compiled from a number of her columns for The New York Observer. In the pilot, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), who authors a similar newspaper column for the fictional New York City Star, and her three friends--Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon)--discuss the issue of whether women are capable of having sex like men. Carrie also has an embarrassing first run-in with Mr. Big (Chris Noth), with whom she will begin a tumultuous relationship that will last the length of the series.
Sex and the City didn’t really break out with fans until the second season, when the format of the show changed a bit: Carrie stopped addressing the camera directly, and simply provided a voice-over narration, and the man-on-the-street-type testimonials by different characters were largely omitted. The main premise--that each episode provides fodder for one of Carrie’s columns, each of which features a different question about sex, love and relationships--remained constant throughout the show, as did the unusually frank discussion and portrayal of sex that became the show’s hallmark.
At the Emmy Awards, Sex and the City was nominated in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series in each of its six seasons; it won the award in 2001. In 2004, Parker collected an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, while Cynthia Nixon triumphed in the supporting category. To win, Nixon beat out co-stars Davis and Cattrall, who had been nominated in five out of the six seasons of the show’s run. Cattrall and Parker both took home Golden Globe Awards for their performances as well, and the show received three Globes for Best TV Series - Musical or Comedy.
As soon as the series wrapped up in 2004, buzz began about a possible big-screen adaptation. Though the project stalled due to questions over money and Cattrall’s reported reluctance to sign on to the project, the plans finally came to fruition in late May 2008, when Sex and the City: The Movie was released to mixed reviews but great box-office success, including a $55.7 million opening weekend haul. As with the series, Parker served as an executive producer for the movie, which was written and directed by Michael Patrick King.
