What a great day yesterday started out to be! I had joined a cookbook exchange a couple months ago & got triple hosed in the deal. Not only did the person I sent books to never acknowledge that they received them (a strike against me), but the person who was supposed to send to me never did, so not only did I not get any cookbooks to enjoy, but I had another strike against me because I never acknowledged that I received any books (because I didn't!) Well, the mark against me for not sending was removed because the person I sent to was never heard from again so they assumed they received the books but just never logged back into the system because ... they just wanted to take the free stuff & run? They died? Who knows. Same for me not acknowledging that I received anything ... I filled out a form that I had been hosed (no gift) & after repeated attempts they weren't able to get a hold of that person either, so they finally believed me. Talk about some bad luck. My 1st time in one of this site's exchanges & I got ripped from both sides. Oh well! I gave up. It seems thousands enjoyed the exchanges on this site, but it wasn't for me apparently. People suck. Then I got my rematch (people who generously send to people who got hosed by their original match). What a wonderful person! Not only did they send me TWO cookbooks, but they sent me 2 GREAT cookbooks! WOOHOO! Thank you MaddenCowboy! It's nice to know that somewhere out there, there are nice people who are willing to not only be NICE in general, but even make up for the inadequacies of others. I may be a fool, but I signed up for the next exchange. I sure hope I have better luck this time & don't have to rely on the generosity of a wonderful rematcher. Not items specific this time. I managed to get everything done yesterday & decided to sit down early & watch some Netflix & crochet. Something I don't get a chance to do very often. Well, THAT didn't last too long. Before I knew it the movie was paused, I was up, & running out of the house for someone. Last second errands that weren't planned, a BITCH of horrible human being that I now hope to get fired from her job because she doesn't DESERVE a job, a call in the middle of all that causing a scramble to end the errands & race back into district, then disregarded, back to the errands, back to the house, a bunch of stuff here, then Pete came home, then to the other house to mow, then dinner, then bed. So much for my movie & so much for crocheting. I think I'm going to make a taco pork skillet for dinner. Probably not tonight because it's FD maintenance night, but tomorrow. :) Heck, if I had the time I would have done it tonight & brought it to the FD for everyone to enjoy! I used to do that when I was on the Branch FD ... bring home cooked dinners or baked desserts on Tuesday nights ... but I had a LOT more time back then. I miss doing that. :)

In the wake of the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4, China
issues a warrant for a leading Chinese dissident who had taken refuge
in the U.S. embassy in Beijing. The diplomatic standoff lasted for a
year, and the refusal of the United States
to hand the dissident over to Chinese officials was further evidence of
American disapproval of China's crackdown on political protesters.
In
April and May 1989, hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered in
Beijing to call for greater political democracy in communist China. On
June 4, Chinese soldiers and police swarmed into the center of protest
activity, Tiananmen Square, killing hundreds and arresting thousands.
The Chinese government used this brutal crackdown as a pretext for
issuing an arrest warrant for Fang Lizhi, an internationally respected
astrophysicist and leading Chinese dissident. Although Fang had not
participated in the Tiananmen Square protests, he had been a consistent
advocate of greater political democracy and a persistent critic of
government policies. In February 1989, more than one hundred Chinese
security personnel forcibly prevented Fang from meeting with visiting
President George Bush.
In
the June arrest warrant, Fang and his wife, Li Shuxian, were charged
with "committing crimes of counter-revolutionary propaganda and
instigation." Fang and Li immediately took refuge in the U.S. embassy.
Chinese officials demanded that the American government hand over the
pair, but the U.S. refused. Almost exactly one year later, Fang and Li
were given free passage out of the country and they left the U.S.
embassy for the first time since June 1989. The action was part of a
wider effort by the Chinese government to repair some of the
international damage done to its reputation in the wake of the Tiananmen
Square incident. In addition to Fang and Li, hundreds of other
political prisoners were also released. Fang and Li traveled to the
United States and took up residence. Fang continued his dissident
activities against the Chinese government and taught in both America and
Great Britain.
The incident indicated that feelings about what
had occurred in Tiananmen Square ran high, both in the United States and
China. For America, the brutal attack on the protesters repulsed most
people and led Congress to pass economic sanctions against the Chinese
government. In China, the refusal to hand over Fang and the U.S.
criticisms of what the Chinese government considered to be a purely
internal matter generated a tremendous amount of resentment. The issue
of human rights in China continued to be a major issue in relations
between the U.S. and China throughout the 1990s and into the 21st
century.
Do you really believe people should tithe or give to the church with a credit card when we live in a culture where the #1 cause of divorce is money problems? I know people will argue that it's more convenient. Well, part of the exercise of giving is to build the character of the giver!
If you're serving coffee or hot tea, the cup & saucer go just above & slightly to the right of the knife & spoons. At a formal meal, the cup & saucer are brought to the table after the entree & placed on the right side in the same spot.

Pull out the stockpile of cloth napkins from the linen closet & start using them instead of paper napkins. Just think of how much paper product won't go into the landfill over your lifetime! Have family members refold napkins after a meal & leave them at their table places for reuse at the next meal. Cloth napkins should to into the laundry after a few days of use.
Ruritanian:
Of, relating to, or having the characteristics of an imaginary place of high romance.
The dancers are dressed in vaguely Ruritanian costumes, the men in military, the women in stiff tutus.
In 1894, British author Anthony Hope published The Prisoner of Zenda, a novel set in the mythical kingdom or Ruritania. The book relates the adventures of Rudolf Rassendyll, a GBBritish gentleman who impersonates the king of Ruritania to save him from a treasonous plot. An improbable but high-spirited tale filled with heroes, villains, courtly intrigue, romance, & sword play, Hope's narrative (& its fictional locale) quickly capotured the imagination of the public. Within 2 years of the novel's publication, George Bernard Shaw had seen fit to use :Ruritanian" as a generic adjective: "Our common sense ... must immediately put a summary stop to the somewhat silly Ruritanian gambols of our imagination." Romantic or fanciful places or things have been called "Ruritanian" ever since.

You have a large Christmas cactus. You'd like to subdivide it, to share it with your friends. No problem, right?
Divide or subdivide, no; pass it on, yes. In spring, as the growing season begins, you can propagate any number of new holiday cactuses using cuttings. To take cuttings, simply twist off (don't cut) pieces 2 or 3 segments long. Plant them deep enough to keep them standing straight in a freely draining potting medium. Keep the medium in the dry side. They'll root after 5 weeks in filtered light. Increase watering once the roots grow, & transplant after 6 months. With luck, they could bloom at their usual time. No matter how many cuttings you take, you'll still have a sizeable plant left over.
A large mature Christmas cactus is a lovely gift of a nursing home or school. Everyone there can take cuttings, too.
