I managed to get everything finished yesterday with the exception of 2 things: 1) I would have liked to go buy some building materials. 2) Dinner would have been nice, but Pete over-ate at lunch & wasn't hungry. & I wasn't about to cook dinner for 1. Pete had work to do from home & we were up until 2:a until he could reach a stopping point. Then there was a possible structure fire at about 3:30a. Sim City Social is in open Beta as of today & I really do enjoy that game. Now I have that AND Sims Social to play online. I received my Reddit Arbitrary Day 2012 match a few minutes ago & after a little research I think I found a great gift for the guy. I hope he likes it! I'd tell you more about the gift, but if the guy is smart (of course he is, he's a geek), he'll find & possibly read this post & I don't want to ruin his surprise. :) I'm also hoping I have a little better luck this time than I did with the last exchange. If it weren't for a very generous re-gifter, I wouldn't have received anything at all. The person I sent my gift to didn't even bother to say thank you or acknowledge that they received it, making it appear to Reddit that I didn't send my gift. Anyway ... wish me luck on this exchange, I know I did right by the person I got as a match! I even did better than I did with the cookbook exchange. With each exchange I'm a part of, I'll improve as a gifter. My son is showing interest in the Reddit gift exchanges & I hope he joins, it's lots of fun!

On this day in 2009, Michael Jackson, one of the most
commercially successful entertainers in history, dies at the age of 50
at his home in Los Angeles, California, after suffering from cardiac arrest caused by a fatal combination of drugs given to him by his personal doctor.
Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana,
the seventh of Katherine and Joe Jackson’s nine children. At the age of
5, Jackson began performing with his older brothers in a music group
coached by their steelworker father. In 1968, Motown Records signed the
group, which became known as the Jackson 5, and Michael Jackson, a
natural showman, emerged as the lead singer and star. The Jackson 5’s
first album, released in 1969, featured the hit "I Want You Back," and
the group’s brand of pop-soul-R&B music made them an immediate
success. Their musical popularity even led to their starring in their
own TV cartoon series in the early 1970s.
Jackson
released his first solo album, "Got to Be There," in 1972, while
continuing to sing with his brothers. Six years later, in 1978, he made
his big-screen debut as the Scarecrow in "The Wiz," an adaptation of the
Broadway musical of the same name. Directed by Quincy Jones, the film
starred an all-black cast that included singer Diana Ross as Dorothy.
Jones collaborated with Jackson on his 1979 album “Off the Wall,” which
sold some 7 million copies worldwide. The pair teamed up again for
Jackson’s now-iconic 1982 album, "Thriller," which went on to sell 50
million copies around the globe, making it the best-selling studio album
of all time. "Thriller" is credited with jump-starting the era of music
videos and playing a key role in the rise of then-fledging cable TV
network MTV, which launched in 1981.
In 1983, Jackson created a
massive sensation on a live Motown anniversary TV special when he
performed his now-signature Moonwalk dance step while wearing a black
fedora and a single white glove covered with rhinestones. According to
The Los Angeles Times critic Robert Hillburn, the performance served as
Jackson’s "unofficial coronation as the King of Pop. Within months, he
changed the way people would hear and see pop music, unleashing an
influence that rivaled that of Elvis Presley and the Beatles."
Jackson’s
next solo effort, "Bad," debuted in 1987. It sold 8 million copies and
featured a music video from acclaimed movie director Martin Scorsese. By
this time, however, Jackson had paid a high price for his massive
success. According to The Los Angeles Times: "He became so accustomed to
bodyguards and assistants that he once admitted that he trembled if he
had to open his own front door."
By the 1990s, Jackson’s life
was near-constant tabloid fodder. In 1993, he was accused of molesting a
13-year-old boy who had been a sleepover guest at his home. Jackson
denied the allegations and the criminal investigation was dropped;
however, the singer later settled a civil lawsuit with the boy’s family
for a reported $20 million. In 2003, Jackson was accused of molesting
another boy. Following a highly publicized trial in 2005, he was
acquitted of all charges. During these years, Jackson also faced
intense media scrutiny over his radically altered physical appearance,
which included an ever-lighter complexion (which he attributed to a skin
condition) and multiple plastic surgeries. Although Jackson himself was
mostly close-mouthed on the topic, media sources alleged that Jackson
developed an obsession with cosmetic surgery, in part, following an
accident he suffered in January 1984 while shooting a Pepsi commercial.
During filming, a pyrotechnics mishap set the singer’s hair on fire, and
he suffered burns on his head and face that required reconstructive
surgery. In the aftermath of the surgery, Jackson reportedly suffered
from an addiction to prescription painkillers.
Jackson also made
headlines with his brief marriage (1994-1994) to Lisa Marie Presley,
the daughter of singer Elvis Presley. From 1996 to 1999, he was wed to
Debbie Rowe, the former assistant of his dermatologist and the mother of
two of his three children. (Jackson’s youngest child, a boy, was
reportedly born via a surrogate.)
On June 25, 2009, Jackson, who
after a lengthy time away from the public spotlight was preparing for a
series of summer concerts in London, was discovered unconscious in his
Los Angeles mansion. The Los Angeles coroner’s officer later ruled the
pop star’s death a homicide after lethal levels of the powerful sedative
propofol, as well other drugs, were found in his system. Jackson’s
personal physician, who was at the singer’s home when he died, had been
giving him propofol as a sleep aid for a period of weeks.
On
July 7, 2009, more than 20,000 fans attended a public memorial for
Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Over 30 million viewers
tuned in watch the event on cable TV, while millions more viewed it
online.

There are 2 airplanes heading straight toward each other. One plane is traveling at 15 kilometers per minute, & the other is traveling at 10 kilometers per minute. Assuming that the planes are exactly 1000 kilometers apart, what distance will be between them one minute before they meet?
25 kilometers. Since they are traveling at a combined speed of 25 kilometers per minute toward each other, they will be 25 kilometers apart 1 minute before they meet.

The actor Tom Cruise has an infamous interview with Matt Lauer, host of NBC’s morning talk show Today,
on this day in 2005. During the interview, Lauer challenged Cruise
about critical comments the actor had made regarding the actress Brooke
Shields’ use of anti-depressant medications to treat her post-partum
depression.
One of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men since the late 1980s, Cruise was on Today to promote his forthcoming movie, The War of the Worlds,
the director Steven Spielberg’s big-budget movie version of H.G. Wells’
classic science-fiction novel. Cruise was happy to talk about the
movie, as well as his upcoming marriage to the actress Katie Holmes,
whom he had proposed to atop the Eiffel Tower a short time before,
following a whirlwind romance.
When Lauer asked Cruise about his
criticism of Shields, however, the exchange got heated, as Cruise’s
demeanor became visibly more serious and combative. As a leading member
of the Church of Scientology, Cruise is against the use of
anti-depressant drugs or psychiatric therapy of any kind. “I really care
about Brooke Shields,” Cruise said. “…[But] there’s misinformation, and
she doesn’t understand the history of psychiatry...psychiatry is a
pseudoscience.” After chastising Lauer for being “glib” and not knowing
enough about the topic, Cruise mentioned his research into the use of
the prescription drug Ritalin, which is notably used to treat
hyperactive children. When Lauer mentioned that he knew people for whom
prescription drugs had worked, Cruise accused him of “advocating”
Ritalin, to which Lauer got visibly frustrated and said “I am
not….You’re telling me that your experiences with the people I know,
which are zero, are more important than my experiences….And I’m telling
you, I’ve lived with these people and they’re better.”
The Lauer interview marked the latest in what the Washington Post called
at the time “a series of manic moments in public, in which the screen
idol appeared to be losing his chiseled, steely reserve.” Another of
these moments had occurred earlier that month on Oprah Winfrey’s talk
show, where Cruise jumped up and down on a couch professing his love for
Holmes. During the Today interview, Holmes sat in the wings watching “adoringly” as her fiance “Chernobyled” (again in the words of the Washington Post).
Some blamed Cruise’s run of out-of-control public outbursts on the
actor’s split with his longtime publicist, Pat Kingsley, in the spring
of 2004 and his decision to entrust his sister, Lee Ann DeVette, with
all his publicity. In November 2005, after the worst run of publicity in
his career, Cruise replaced DeVette with another veteran publicist,
Paul Bloch.

Will-o'-the-wisp:
1: A light that appears at night over marshy ground. 2: A misleading or elusive goal or hope.
Though her friends think she's chasing a will-o'-the-wisp, Sara is determined to quit her job & pursue her dream of becoming a movie star.
The will-o'the-wisp is a flamelike phosphorescence caused by gasses from decaying plants in marshy areas. In olden days, it was personified as "will with the wisp," a sprite who carried a fleeting "wisp" of light. (An 18th-century fairy tale described Will as one "who bears the wispy fire to trail the swains among the mire.") Foolish travelers were said to try to follow the light & were then led astray into the marsh. The light was 1st know, & still is, as "ignis fatuus," which is Latin means "foolish fire." Eventually, the name "will-o'-the-wisp" was extended to any impractical or unattainable goal.
Your housesitter left the garage door open one night on a freezing cold night, & now your beautiful oleander, which was wintering there, looks dead. Is it? Is a freezing cold night always fatal?
Not necessarily. When a plant freezes, death comes as a result of cells bursting. If enough cells die, so does the plant. The tricky part is figuring out how far below freezing the temperature has to go, & for how long, before damage is fatal. Leaves are out there in the cold air, so they freeze 1st. A plant can stand losing its leaves & a few branches as long as its roots survive. Since they are insulated by soil, it takes colder temperatures or a longer time for them to freeze.
How much soil was in the pot & how wet it was are important factors. Moist soil is a better insulator for the roots than dry soil is because the water has to freeze 1st.
Some or all of your oleander has obviously been damaged, but keep caring for it until it's very clear that reports of its death have not been exaggerated.
