I've completely rescheduled everything to get more time & my days are STILL so busy that I'm 4 hours behind right now & haven't gotten on here for 3 days! Talk about overloaded. Kyle is going to fire-rescue camp (I'm SO proud!), Today is the anniversary of when Pete proposed, the gardens are doing great, I've been cooking up a storm & lovin' it, I'm excited about my business ideas & plans, I've completed my Landscaping course, now I'm taking a Professional Organizer course & I think I missed my calling in life ... NOW I know what I should have done for a career. Oh well, it's never too late & that's why I'm taking the course. After this course it's on to cat training. They say you can't train a cat ... we'll see. I have 1 course coming up & 3 kittens to prove the theory right or wrong. One of my Sims did some tinkering on his dishwasher while I unloaded & reloaded ours.

Celebrity private detective Anthony Pellicano found guilty (2008):
On April 30, 2008, Pellicano himself addressed judge and jury. According to a report in the New York Times,
he referred to himself in the third person, as Judge Dale Fischer had
ordered him to do given that he was representing himself. He steadfastly
denied that he was running a criminal enterprise, and maintained that
he was acting as a lone private eye. “Pellicano alone is responsible.
That’s the simple truth….He only allowed others to learn what he wanted
them to. He alone made all the decisions, protected all the secrets,
protected all the clients.”
The jury returned its verdict a
little more than two weeks later, after nine days of deliberation. In
addition to Pellicano, the jury also convicted his four
co-defendants--the former L.A. police detective Mark Arneson, the former
telephone company worker Ray Turner, the computer expert Kevin
Kachikian and the businessman Abner Nicherie--all of whom were found to
have played roles in the detective’s information-gathering methods. In a
separate trial, Pellicano was convicted in August 2008 (along with the
entertainment lawyer Terry Christensen) of conspiring to wiretap the
phones of the ex-wife of the billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian during a
child-support dispute.
Detoxify:

Yi wrote her term paper on the city's efforts to detoxify a contaminated landfill. These days, "detoxify" can mean "to free (someone) from a substance
addiction" (& yes, it's the source of "detox," a more recent word
that also refers to getting drugs or alcohol out of a person's system).
Originally, however, detoxification was a process applied to things
rather than people. In its earliers uses - from about 1905 - "detoxify"
referred to the removal of poison, or of poisonous or damaging
properties, from a harmful substance, or to the removal of poisonous or
toxic substances from something contaminated (such as the bloodstream).
The specific application to removing "poison" from an addict is
relatively new, dating to the mid-20th century. Today, "detoxify" is also commonly used in reference to counteracting the activity or effect of anything harmful (such as propaganda).

Magic plays center as a rookie, wins championship (1980):
On May 16, 1980, Los Angeles Lakers point guard
Earvin "Magic" Johnson steps in for injured center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
and scores 42 points, leading the Lakers to a four games-to-two series
win over the Philadelphia 76ers for their first championship since 1972.
In 1979, Magic had led Michigan State to the NCAA title over Larry Bird’s Indiana
State in the most-watched college final ever. That fall, he was drafted
by the Lakers as the first overall pick. In 1980, his rookie season,
the Lakers went 60-22, a 13-game improvement from their 47-35 mark the
year before. That year, Abdul-Jabbar averaged 24.8 points and 10.8
rebounds per game and was named Most Valuable Player of the regular
season.
In the playoffs, the
Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns four games to one to advance to the Western
Conference finals against the defending champion Seattle Supersonics.
After losing a close first game, the Lakers went up 3-1 in the series.
At halftime of the deciding fifth game, the normally silent Abdul-Jabbar
gave an angry pep talk, urging his team to pick up their play and
finish off the Sonics. Abdul-Jabbar finished that game with 38 points,
11 rebounds and 7 blocked shots while Magic Johnson, playing with a
101-degree fever, racked up a triple-double. The 111-105 victory
catapulted the Lakers into the NBA finals.
In
the finals, the Lakers met the Philadelphia 76ers, led by forwards
Julius "Dr. J" Erving and Darryl Dawkins, defensive specialist Bobby
Jones and guards Maurice Cheeks and Doug Collins. Abdul-Jabbar dominated
the first five games of the finals, averaging 31 points and 12 rebounds
per game, as the Lakers went up 3-2 in the series. When he twisted an
ankle in Game 5, even the Lakers front office assumed that the team
would travel without their star center to Philadelphia and lose Game 6, a
fact made evident by the team’s decision not to take their celebratory
champagne with them to Philly.
No
one expected that Magic, at 6 feet 9 inches the tallest point guard in
league history, would so easily make the transition to center. Magic
rang up 42 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the Lakers to
victory and was named Most Valuable Player of the finals, the first of
three such awards in his career. The Lakers went on to dominate the NBA,
winning a total of five championships in the 1980s.

On this day in 2005, Toyota Motor Company announces its plans
to produce a gasoline-electric hybrid version of its bestselling Camry
sedan. Built at the company's Georgetown, Kentucky, plant, the Camry became Toyota's first hybrid model to be manufactured in the United States.
Toyota
introduced the Camry--the name is a phonetic transcription of the
Japanese word for "crown"--in the Japanese market in 1980; it began
selling in the United States the following year. By the late 1980s
and early 1990s, the success of the Camry and its Japanese competitor,
the Honda Accord, had allowed Toyota and Honda to seize control of the
midsize sedan market in the United States. By then, Toyota had adapted
the Camry more to American tastes, increasing its size and replacing its
original boxy design with a smoother, more rounded style. By 2003, as
Micheline Maynard recorded in her book "The End of Detroit," apart from
the early-'90s success of the Ford Taurus, the Camry and Accord had long
maintained their position atop the list of the nation's best-selling
cars overall, each selling around 400,000 units per year.
In 1997, Toyota's Prius--the world's first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle--went on sale in Japan.
It was released worldwide in 2001. By using an electric motor to
supplement power from the gasoline, hybrid technology resulted in
greatly improved fuel efficiency and higher gas mileage. Honda launched
its own hybrid lineup with the Insight in 1999 and continued with the
hybrid Civic in 2002. By then, skyrocketing gas prices had combined with
a backlash against gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to make
hybrids suddenly chic. Eco-conscious Hollywood celebrities such as
Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz proudly drove their Priuses around
Los Angeles, and by 2003 Honda and Toyota were selling 50,000 hybrids a
year in the United States. The plans to develop a hybrid Camry,
announced in May 2005, brought the total number of Toyota-made hybrid
models to four, including the Prius; the Lexus RX 400h, a midsize sport
utility vehicle (SUV) released in April 2005; and a second SUV, the
Toyota Highlander, released that June.

The Middle English word trist, from which "tristful" is derived, means "sad." Today, we spell this word "triste" (echoing the spelling of a French ancestor), whereas "tristful" has continued to be spelled without the "e." Is there a connection between "triste" ("sad") & "tryst" ("a secret rendezvous of lovers")? Not exactly. "Tryst" can be traced back to a Middle English trist, but it's a different word, one that was a synonym of "trust." This word eventually fall into disuse, but before doing so, it may have given rise to a word for a station used by hunters, which in turn led to "tryst."
